Medical Laboratory Scientist II, Microbiology Specialist

Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled Medical Laboratory Scientist II, Microbiology to join our team at the University of Maryland Medical System. As a key member of our multidisciplinary patient care services team, you will be responsible for performing complex testing, maintaining quality control, and ensuring the safety and efficiency of laboratory functions.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform waived, moderate, and high complexity testing using manual and automated processes, ensuring compliance with regulatory agency guidelines.
- Identify and resolve analytical problems, troubleshoot equipment issues, and take corrective action to evaluate testing procedures, patient results, and specimen integrity.
- Review and record quality control, determining the acceptability of testing, patient results, and instrument function.
- Respond to clinical and customer concerns, resolving issues in a confidential manner.
- Attend and lead mandatory education, training, and in-service meetings specific to the department.
- Assist with the development and modification of procedures and assume additional responsibilities as needed.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, biology, or a related science, or an Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or a related field, or completion of a Military Laboratory Technician program with experience required.
- 0-1 years (bachelor's degree) preferred; minimum of 3 years of clinical laboratory experience (Associates in MLT or related science or Military Training) required.
- ASCP or equivalent certification preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Proficient knowledge of clinical laboratory processes, analytical procedures, and various laboratory equipment, including routine maintenance and calibration.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to perform basic computer skills used in a laboratory setting.
- Ability to perform mathematical and statistical operations for recording and evaluating lab results.
- Ability to handle potentially infectious materials, observing proper safety regulations and procedures.
