Youth Custody Officer

Job Summary:

Under the supervision of a senior officer, the Youth Custody Officer is responsible for maintaining the safety and security of juveniles within Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) facilities. This includes responding to emergencies, maintaining order, and enforcing relevant rules and regulations.

The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma or equivalent and any combination of training and experience that enables them to meet the minimum standards of the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (P.O.S.T.). A valid driver's license is also required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Enforcing rules and regulations to maintain public safety and control of juveniles
  • Escorting juveniles during transit and temporary leaves
  • Overseeing juveniles during work assignments, meals, and recreation periods
  • Guarding facility entrances and screening visitors
  • Inspecting and maintaining control of key logs, tools, and equipment
  • Patrolling assigned areas and reporting any problems
  • Preparing facility-related reports
  • May handle and train canines for tracking, search and rescue, guard duty, and contraband detection

Agency Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid driver's license

Military Salary Increase Incentive:

  • 2.5% for one year of active-duty service
  • 5% for two years of active-duty service
  • 7.5% for three years of active-duty service
  • 10% for 4+ years of active-duty service
