Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Nursing Assistant to join our team at the Northern Arizona VA Health Care System. As a member of the Associate Director Patient Care Services team, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality care to our veterans.

Responsibilities
  • Utilize glucose monitoring machines to receive glucose readings for veterans and refer deviations to appropriate healthcare staff.
  • Provide direct care for complex veterans, including administering complete tracheostomy care and monitoring patient intake and output.
  • Make observations of subtle changes in residents' conditions and act accordingly within the NA's assigned role.
  • Document care given, observations, and responses on appropriate tools or forms.
  • Respond appropriately to subtle patient changes by contacting the appropriate nursing personnel.
  • Perform nursing procedures within the scope of practice and according to policies and standard procedures.
  • Work on small group activities with veterans/residents according to the patients/residents' treatment plans.
  • Recognize residents' autonomy and promote independence by means of respect, limit setting, and individualized treatment.
  • Actively participate in treatment planning meetings.
  • Utilize equipment to promote veteran self-care, such as lift equipment, hydro sound tubs, and veteran/resident wandering systems.
  • Verbally provide patient information to the treatment team for inclusion in the veterans/residents' plan of care and participate in treatment team meetings for resident care planning.
  • Enter information about the residents' conditions in the chart, utilizing appropriate formats.
  • Maintain a clean, safe environment for patients/residents, removing defective equipment, reporting hazards, observing safety regulations, contributing to infection control, and utilizing proper aseptic technique in performance of duties.
  • Serve as the unit safe patient handling liaison, preceptor, and mentor to other NAs.
  • Orient members of the healthcare team to the units as appropriate and function as a member of the unit base counsel.
  • Manage distributed patient behavior and intervene appropriately, requesting assistance from other healthcare members when necessary.
  • Initiate basic life support and take appropriate action in emergency situations.
Work Schedule

This position requires flexibility in schedule and assignments, as it is a 24/7 hospital. Some positions may require rotation of tours or indefinite work on non-administrative tours as established by the immediate supervisor.

Requirements
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical examination/evaluation.
  • Must participate in the seasonal influenza vaccination program and the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination program.
Qualifications

Applicants must meet the basic requirements for the Nursing Assistant position, including six months of general experience or one year of education above high school with courses related to the NA occupation.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-05. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-03 to GS-05.
