Compensation and Benefits

The estimated annual salary for this role ranges from $103,600.00 to $220,000.00, depending on location and experience. About the Role

This challenging yet rewarding position requires a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree or equivalent from an AVMA-accredited veterinary school. You must also hold active licensure as a veterinarian without contingencies in the state where the hospital is located or be able to obtain it by start date. Additionally, you should have current DEA and Controlled Substance licenses, if applicable, in the state where the hospital is located or be able to obtain them by start date. A USDA Category I (minimum) Accreditation or completion within two months of hire date is also required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide Excellent Patient Care: Perform physical examinations, diagnose and treat diseases, and provide preventive care according to patient signalment, lifestyle, and environment.
  • Utilize Problem-Based Approach: Develop a complete problem list for every patient examined, a complete list of differential diagnoses for each problem identified, a complete diagnostic plan, and appropriate treatments based on interpretation of diagnostic test results leading to confirmed or suspected diagnoses.
  • Document Patient Observations and Findings: Document all patient observations, findings of exams and diagnostics, treatments and medications, client interactions, and tentative and confirmed diagnoses in the medical record in a concise and detail fashion, according to practice convention.
  • Surgical Procedures: Perform routine and complex surgical procedures, including spays/neuters, abdominal exploratory, and mass removals, as well as dental procedures like full dental examination, evaluation of dental radiographs, simple and complex extractions, and oral surgical procedures.
  • Treatment Plans and Hospitalization: Develop treatment plans for patients undergoing day hospitalization based on complete problem-based assessment and transition patients to overnight care as needed, ensuring continuity of patient care with referral hospitals.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Participate in Rounds: Participate in rounds as incoming or exiting doctor at beginning and end of shifts.
  • Disseminate Knowledge: Disseminate knowledge throughout staff to improve the level of care and communication provided to both patients and clients.
  • Perform Additional Duties: Perform additional duties as assigned by management.

Nature of Supervision:

In all activities related to the care of individual patients, direct supervision will be taken from the Hospital Medical Leader or Area Medical Director. Veterinarians will have discretion regarding decisions related to patient care while upholding standards set forth in the Petco Veterinary SOPs.
