We are seeking a reliable and skilled Deckhand and Purser Assistant to join our team at the Skagit County Ferry.

About the Job

This is an On-Call/Part-time position that requires flexibility and adaptability. As a Deckhand and Purser Assistant, you will be responsible for performing duties of both Deckhand and Purser for the County Ferry that transports passengers, vehicles, goods, and services to and from Guemes Island.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform duties of Deckhand and Purser, including opening and closing gates, securing vessels at loading docks, raising and lowering bridges and ramps, controlling and directing vehicles and passengers on and off the ferry.
  • Check oil and coolant levels in main engines and generators.
  • Assist mechanics or shift supervisors in diagnosing and repairing mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Sell tickets and collect fares for passage of passengers and vehicles using the ferry.
  • Daily reconciliation of tickets sold and cash received.
  • Make daily deposits; keep Coast Guard counts of vehicles and passengers.
Requirements
  • Minimum 2 years experience on vessels of similar tonnage preferred.
  • Valid Washington State Driver's License required.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR certification required.
  • Ability to perform Crew drills as required per Coast Guard regulations.
  • Good hand-eye coordination and physical health, vision, and hearing must meet Coast Guard standards.
Working Conditions

The work environment is outdoors and may involve standing in the wheelhouse or walking on a Ferry deck in all types of weather and water conditions. The job requires exposure to gas and diesel fumes, potentially hazardous materials, high noise levels, and mechanical equipment. Occasionally, work may be performed in small, confined spaces or at heights up to 45 feet.

Benefits

This is an On-Call/Part-time position with no guarantee of hours, but may work up to 176 hours per month if available. The estimated hourly salary is $26.13 based on location and industry standards.
