Job Summary:
As a Senior Instrument Fabrication Specialist, you will play a critical role in designing, constructing, and repairing complex scientific and clinical instruments. Your expertise will be essential in ensuring the precision and accuracy of these instruments, which will be used in various research applications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and construct complex scientific and clinical instruments using various shop equipment, including precision lathes, milling machines, and woodworking machines.
  • Work under general supervision to plan and prepare drawings for the construction of new instruments, utilizing shop mathematics and research techniques.
  • Make complex repairs, adjustments, or calibrations to malfunctioning instruments and equipment, using various hand and power tools.
  • Inspect completed work for accuracy and compliance with pertinent safety codes.


Consultation and Instruction:

  • Consult with scientific or clinical customers regarding the construction and modification of equipment.
  • Provide technical instruction and guidance to students and faculty, as well as assist in training lower-level personnel.


Requirements:

Work requires a general background in machine shop equipment operation and metal or plastic work, typically acquired through a technical or vocational high school education. Three years of experience as an Instrument Maker or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience are required. Journey-level experience in instrument making or seven years of experience in design and machining of precision parts for specialized equipment used in scientific research or clinical applications are also acceptable.
