About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Principal Scientist to join our Translational Medicine and Cardiovascular Diseases team at Genentech. As a key member of our team, you will play a critical role in advancing our understanding of disease biology and developing impactful contributions to clinical drug development.

Key Responsibilities
  • Partner with Research to lead preclinical biomarker discovery and development efforts, supporting research programs in cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.
  • Develop and lead early and late-stage clinical development decision-enabling biomarker strategies, integrating biomarker activities in clinical trials, generating biomarker data, and leading the analysis, interpretation, and presentation of results.
  • Collaborate with global development teams to address key questions during late-stage clinical development, including product differentiation, indication expansion, and patient response.
  • Participate in or initiate external collaborations related to understanding disease pathogenesis and patient heterogeneity.
  • Serve as the biomarker lead on cross-functional project teams and internal review committees.
  • Collaborate closely with internal partners, including Research, Bioanalytical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Preclinical and Clinical Pharmacology, Biostatistics, Regulatory, and Bioinformatics, as well as with external partners.
  • Write biomarker sections of clinical and non-clinical protocols, reports, and regulatory filings, publish results in high-quality journals, and present at external conferences.
Requirements
  • PhD, MD, or MD/PhD in Endocrinology, Cell Biology, Physiology, or related fields with 6+ years post-doctoral, fellowship, or industry experience and prior experience with translational research and/or clinical trials for cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.
  • Experience in, and deep technical understanding of, preclinical and clinical sample collection/processing and cellular/molecular lab techniques such as cell culture, primary cell isolation from tissues, immunostaining, molecular biology, ELISA, western blot, flow cytometry, genomic sequencing, qRT-PCR, and/or transcriptomics.
  • Demonstrate a high level of independence with ability to develop hypotheses, direct lab scientists, develop analysis plans, interpret, and present results.
  • Preferred candidates will have prior biostatistics or bioinformatics experience (omics, pathway, network analysis, etc.) with programming skills in Python or R.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, as evidenced by publications, external presentations, and drug development reports, are required, along with extensive experience in leading R&D teams and fostering internal collaborations and partnerships with academic universities.
  • Willingness to collaborate across time zones, including our Swiss site, is a must.

Relocation benefits are available for this position. The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco, California is $176,600-$328,000. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
