AOD Prevention Specialist

Reporting to the Associate Dean of Health and Wellness, the incumbent will work as a part of the Health and Wellness Pillar team. As the Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) Prevention Specialist, the incumbent will be responsible for developing, implementing, and assessing a theory-based and evidence-informed campus-wide strategy to reduce the consequences associated with the use and misuse of substances.
Key Responsibilities- Strategic Prevention Programming: Develop and implement a comprehensive public health strategy for AOD use/misuse for the University using national best practice guidelines and contemporary research.
- Needs Assessments: Conduct surveys, questionnaires, and focus groups on AOD topics.
- Programming and Outreach: Plan, develop, implement, and evaluate programming/educational workshops/training, and outreach efforts around AOD topics of community relevance.
- Direct Outreach: Provide direct outreach to at-risk student groups such as athletes, IFSC members, etc.
- AOD Educational Programming: Provide AOD educational programming during high-risk times on campus such as homecoming, Halloween, concerts, 4/20, and Friday and Saturday evenings.
- Peer Education: Participate in hiring, training, and overseeing of AOD peer educators and interns.
- Social Norms Campaigns: Develop social norms/social marketing campaign strategies related to AOD issues.
- Campus and Community Partnerships: Form and manage a coalition with campus and community partners to guide the development and implementation of strategies that will lead to a long-term involvement of the community, institutions, organizations, and campus stakeholders on issues of underage college drinking and drug abuse prevention.
- Consultation and Training: Provide consultation and training to professional staff within the Campus community on substance-related issues.
- New Student Orientations: Collaborate with New Student Orientations to administer online pre-matriculation alcohol and other drug education courses.
- Evidence-Based Interventions: Collaborate with the Office of Student Conduct to implement evidence-based interventions for AOD violations on campus, including, but not limited to, delivering BASICS interventions.
- Substance Education Classes: Deliver Substance Education Classes and track participation data in collaboration with campus stakeholders.
- Recovery Community: Work to develop a recovery community, by facilitating training for students, staff, and faculty on supporting students in recovery.
- Master's Degree: Master's degree in Public Health, Social Work, Counseling, Higher Education, or related field.
- Professional Experience: Two (2) years of post-graduate degree professional experience working in prevention and health promotion activities related to Alcohol and other Drugs or closely related work.
- Knowledge and Skills: Demonstrated knowledge of current best practices and public health strategies around AOD prevention and intervention work. Experience working with and creating content/presentation/workshops/training that will engage a diverse population on Alcohol and Other Drugs and other related health issues.
- College Setting Experience: 2-years post-graduate degree work experience in a college setting.
- College Student Experience: Experience working with college students, particularly in an advisory or educational role related to health promotion, student affairs, or substance abuse prevention.
- Peer Education Experience: Experience with Peer Education facilitation, training, and assessment.
- Certifications: Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) credential or Certified Health Education Specialist credential.
- Data Analysis: Experience summarizing data trends to present to campus communities and to use to advocate for programs and services.
- Training and Certifications: Experience, certification or training in Brief Alcohol Screening and Interventions for College Students (BASICS), Motivational Interviewing, Cannabis Screening and Interventions for College Students (CASICS), CHOICES, Marijuana Prevention Program (MAP), and/or Recovery Coaching, etc.
