Job Description

The Department of Transportation is seeking a highly skilled Environmental Science Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our mitigation and conservation team, you will play a critical role in ensuring that our transportation projects are conducted in an environmentally responsible manner.

About the Job

This position is located in San Luis Obispo, California, and offers a competitive salary range of $90,000 - $120,000 per year, depending on experience. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in environmental science, with experience in species mitigation, habitat restoration, and regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct environmental impact assessments and develop mitigation plans for transportation projects;
  • Collaborate with project biologists and aquatic resource biologists to identify and develop timely mitigation solutions;
  • Develop and maintain relationships with resource agencies, non-profits, and private landowners to create new opportunities for mitigation;
  • Work closely with high-level management and executive staff to ensure that mitigation efforts align with departmental goals and objectives.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science, biology, ecology, or related field;
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in environmental consulting, government agency, or non-profit organization;
  • Strong knowledge of species mitigation under CESA and ESA, as well as waters, wetlands, and riparian mitigation under 401, 404, 1600, and CDP permits;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders;
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel occasionally.
