Assistant Animal Care Specialist

Lincoln Park Zoo is seeking a dedicated and passionate Animal Care Specialist to join our team in the Regenstein African Journey area. As a key member of our animal care team, you will be responsible for providing exceptional care to our large mammal collection, including Eastern black rhinos, giraffes, African painted dogs, dwarf crocodiles, and Madagascar hissing cockroaches.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide daily care to animals and their enclosures, including cleaning, feeding, watering, securing, observing, animal training and enrichment, record keeping, and maintaining exhibits.
  • Participate in conservation programs and assist in the development and delivery of educational programs.
  • Clean and maintain animal exhibits, including the use of chemical agents and special tools.
  • Maintain excellence in enclosure maintenance, including furnishing, modifying, and performing minor repairs and upkeep as appropriate.
  • Prepare and distribute animal diets as determined by senior animal management staff.
  • Monitor the health of animals on a daily basis and report any abnormal behavior or problems to the Zoological Manager.
  • Prepare detailed written daily reports and enter them into the computer.
  • Make recommendations regarding diet changes, habitat redesign, and related matters.
  • Monitor the condition of habitats, equipment, and facilities and initiate work orders and emergency repairs as needed.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Manage repairs for equipment and supplies.
  • Adhere to established animal handling and related safety guidelines.
  • Participate in established animal escape drills and procedures.

Requirements:

  • Graduation from a high school or equivalent (GED) is required.
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in Biological Sciences or a closely related discipline is preferred.
  • Previous experience performing animal care activities in a zoo, aquarium, or like institution is required.
  • Experience in designated taxonomic area is preferred.
  • Experience and proficiency in animal training using operant conditioning techniques is preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to remain on feet for long periods of time.
  • Ability to regularly perform a variety of physical tasks, including climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, twisting, reaching, and crawling.
  • Physical strength, including ability to frequently move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in small, confined spaces.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to wear requisite Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that may include rubber/latex gloves, steel-toed boots/shoes, face shields, eye goggles.
  • No allergy-related to plants or animals that may interfere with the ability to work.
  • No impairment of sight, smell, hearing, touch, balance, and ability of movement that might interfere with the ability to work.
  • Ability to maintain immune response to exposure to infectious and parasitic diseases.
  • Must be COVID-19 vaccinated.

Additional Requirements:

  • Available to work all necessary hours, including weekends, holidays, special events, and all shifts.
  • Available to attend training sessions and conferences as needed.
  • A valid driver's license with a good driving record is preferred.
