This senior clinical mental health specialist role is pivotal in delivering high-quality, effective, evidence-based mental health and substance abuse treatment services to the youth served by the Department of Juvenile Justice. In this position, you will be responsible for creating and developing standards for mental health and substance abuse treatment, ensuring compliance with department rules, policies, and standards regarding mental health and substance abuse services for youth assigned to the care and custody or supervision of the Department of Juvenile Justice.



The ideal candidate will have a master's degree or doctoral degree from an accredited college or university with a major in psychology, counseling, or clinical social work. A minimum of two years of clinical experience in delivering mental health and substance abuse services, preferably associated with youth correctional facilities, is required. Experience in trauma-informed care, gender-specific services, and behavioral therapy within juvenile justice settings, as well as substance abuse therapy and treatment, is highly desirable.



This position requires traveling within the south region to provide quarterly monitoring, training, and technical assistance in DJJ Detention Centers and as needed. Candidates must be able to communicate effectively with strong verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking. The salary for this position is $3,169.24 bi-weekly, with opportunities for internal promotion and career advancement.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following duties and responsibilities:




  • Providing training and technical assistance for Juvenile Probation Officers (JPOs) on overdose and suicide prevention using SkillPro and on-site training when requested.
  • Collaborating with the Office of Talent, Leadership & Culture (TLC) to increase field overdose prevention and suicide prevention/awareness through JPO Academy curriculum.
  • Assisting JPOs with connecting families of deceased youth to bereavement support resources.
  • Working on special projects and initiatives to address public health concerns or trends, such as firearm harm-reduction, safety planning for clinicians/caregivers/supervision plans.
  • Providing clinical webinars for providers with potential Continuing Education credits.
  • Drafting contract language for mental health and substance abuse services.
  • Serving as an evaluator for Probation procurements with clinical content.
  • Following up on Probation CCCs relating to mental health.
  • Providing support to probation headquarters staff and field staff.
  • Being the subject matter expert for clinical questions from providers.
  • Ensuring the delivery of high-quality, effective, evidence-based mental health and substance abuse treatment services.
  • Supporting providers with clinical staffing issues.
  • Serving as a point of contact for MQI regarding probation standards related to mental health and substance abuse.
  • Serving on the State Review Team.
  • Liaising between CPOs and other agencies at the state level.
  • Assisting Commitment Managers with placement and review of Comprehensive Evaluations.
  • Providing training to Comprehensive Evaluation providers to increase quality of evaluations.
  • Conducting Day Treatment Pre-Ops and Start-Ups, when applicable.
  • Assisting with complex cases including SIPP/APD placements.
  • Serving on workgroups/committees as needed.
  • Providing professional presentations at conferences/trainings.
  • Providing assistance with communicating mental health/substance abuse issues to the judiciary.


The ideal candidate will possess the following minimum qualifications:




  • Ability to organize work, coordinate with others as necessary, and work independently.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and the creation of PowerPoint presentations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with strong verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking.
  • Ability to conduct research and formulate policy recommendations.
  • Licensure as a psychologist under Chapter 490, F.S., or licensure as a mental health counselor, clinical social worker, or marriage and family therapist under Chapter 491, F.S., is required.
