Job Summary

The Newark Board of Education is seeking a highly skilled Network Administrator 2 to join our team. As a key member of our IT department, you will be responsible for the development, implementation, and maintenance of our multi-network, multi-user Local Area Networks (LAN), Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN), and/or Wide Area Networks (WAN) environments.

Key Responsibilities

Develop, implement, and maintain network infrastructure, including LAN, MAN, and WAN environments.
Maintain and supervise the maintenance of centralized, decentralized, and remote network services, including file service, printing, local electronic mail, Internet electronic mail, office applications, remote access, Internet web connectivity, and mainframe gateway.
Plan and install software updates and patches to network operating systems, server-based applications, and centralized services.
Plan and install hardware upgrades for network servers, gateways, and associated telecommunication devices.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation for network hardware and software.
Provide guidance to infrastructure managers/technicians to troubleshoot and resolve network problems, monitor overall performance, and conduct upgrades as needed.
Administer user access to network resources and add, modify, or delete user accounts for file/print and dial-in servers.
Administer electronic mail gateways, both internal and Internet.
Diagnose and repair or coordinate repair of network hardware.
Install, upgrade, and maintain network firewalls, content filters, and other cybersecurity platforms necessary for the protection of the network.
Monitor network and Internet traffic and take appropriate actions to rectify security-related concerns.
Interface with vendors and government agencies in connection with cybersecurity-related incidents and updates.
Conduct periodic network, application, and database security checks to ensure compliance with the district and industry standards.
Devise and maintain up-to-date network infrastructure, application/data flow, and network security diagrams.
Work with other IT personnel in troubleshooting network and application performance and security-related concerns.
Actively participate in planning, implementation, documentation, and maintenance of Disaster Recovery Procedures and Business Continuity Plan.
Write scripts for automating routine tasks, gathering data, and/or troubleshooting technical problems.
Collect and maintain updated configuration files pertinent to servers, routers, switches, load balancers, and other network infrastructure components.
Diagnose and repair or coordinate repair of network hardware.
Monitor performance of servers and telecommunications devices (such as hubs, switches, and routers) and take appropriate action to tune and optimize such devices to maximize performance and throughput, and minimize downtime.
Monitor disk capacity and take appropriate action to ensure adequate disk space is available to networked users, software applications, and attached devices.
Check and respond appropriately to errors logged by the server and/or network devices.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation (manual or through an online log file) of all errors of high severity and action taken to correct the error.
Develop, implement, and ensure adherence to system standards/procedures.
Maintain the highest levels of network security and data integrity, including antivirus countermeasures.
Develop, test, implement, and periodically update a disaster recovery plan for the enterprise.
Ensure that daily or weekly and incremental or full backups are performed and verified, and rotate media offsite.
Ensure that clients are able to restore files from backup and/or archive.
Provide technical support to end-users.
Maintain knowledge of network-related emerging technologies and evaluate vendor products for potential use within the agency.
Coordinate with OTIS and other government agencies to ensure optimal use of the network topology, WAN, and wiring infrastructure.
Lead the capacity planning process to ensure timely and cost-effective advancement of the network.
Prepare an annual budget for the development, implementation, installation, and termination of network servers and related hardware/software/telecommunications components.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Perform other duties and tasks assigned by supervisor.

Requirements

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree, which must include a minimum of eighteen (18) semester hour credits in mathematics and/or computer science from an accredited college or university.
Four (4) years of experience in the development, implementation, and maintenance of multi-network, multi-user Local Area Networks (LAN), Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN), and/or Wide Area Networks (WAN) environments.
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of industry standard Network Operating Systems (NOS). Windows Server OS and Linux (preferred).
Knowledge of server hardware and associated software.
Knowledge of contemporary scripting languages including but not limited to PowerShell and VBScript (preferred).
Knowledge of telecommunication components used to interconnect servers to communication devices and ultimately clients (PCS).
Knowledge of countermeasures for dealing with network security and virus protection.
Knowledge of techniques to determine system capacity and cost effectiveness of system utilization.
Knowledge of contemporary Cybersecurity best practices, methodologies, protocols, and platforms (preferred).
Knowledge of contemporary network traffic capturing and packet analysis tools (preferred).
Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Active Directory Infrastructure (preferred).
Knowledge of contemporary data encryption standards as well as HIPPA, CIPA, FERPA, and other compliance standards (preferred).
Knowledge of techniques to determine system capacity and cost effectiveness of system utilization.
Ability to establish goals and set priorities.
Ability to schedule and organize work activities and identify/resolve problems which arise.
Ability to interact with orders and come to consensus on various issues.
Ability to prepare clear, sound, accurate, and informative reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
Ability to work independently or in a team environment.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
