Estimated Salary: $45,000 - $65,000 per year

This salary range is based on national averages for Precision Gear Machinists in the United States.

Job Description

The Precision Gear Machinist will be responsible for setting up and operating precision gear grinding machines with special indexing equipment to grind master and precision gears. This includes:

  • Setting up automatic dressing devices to dress wheels to specified profiles
  • Moving controls to set synchronized rotation speeds and feed rates
  • Positioning and securing workpieces on mandrels between centers or in chucks, and turning handwheels to position workpieces and wheels, verifying positions with thickness gauges, dial indicators, and micrometers
  • Turning valve handles and directing flow of coolant against wheels and workpieces
  • Moving controls to index workpieces and feed wheels to workpieces, adjusting depth of cut in parts by sight and feel
  • Verifying dimensions of ground workpieces for conformance to specifications
  • Grinding metallic materials
  • Changing worn tools and cleaning machines, tooling, and parts
  • Operating bench grinders to sharpen tools
  • Performing light machine maintenance (checking oil and coolant levels)
Required Skills and Qualifications

To be successful as a Precision Gear Machinist, you will need:

  • A high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent, and at least two years of experience with gears and grinding tools
  • Experience with using a variety of inspection tools
  • The ability to pass a drug and background check
