Job Summary

Stanford University is seeking an Electron Microscopy Lab Specialist to perform complex functions and activities involved in defined research projects. The ideal candidate will independently conduct a portion of the research project(s) and support the operation of our expanding, state-of-the-art electron microscopy facility.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Sample Preparation and Milling: Independently operate and maintain the Aquilos FIB milling machine to prepare samples for cryo-ET analysis.
  • Research Project Conduct: Independently conduct a portion of the research project(s), making recommendations on experimental design and/or research direction to principal investigators.
  • Data Analysis: Interpret and analyze results from cryo-ET experiments, often where few guidelines exist, and make modifications to existing procedures and protocols.
  • User Support: Train and oversee users for FIB milling, evaluating the quality of data obtained by users.
  • Collaboration: Interface and collaborate with High Performance Computing team to implement data collection strategies that benefit our user community.
Requirements
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in a related scientific field or Master's degree in a related scientific field.
  • Experience: 2-3 years of experience with cryo-FIB milling and SEM, including expertise in handling samples.
  • Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, solid understanding of cryoFIB milling and SEM principles, and familiarity with computational image processing and analysis of cryo-ET images.
Working Conditions
  • Safety: May require working in close proximity to blood borne pathogens and may involve work with hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases.
  • Physical Demands: Ability to lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds and ability to work in a dusty, dirty, and odorous environment.
Compensation and Benefits

The estimated salary range for this position is $71,000 to $88,000 per annum, commensurate with experience. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position.
