This Surgical Assistant position is a key member of the operating room team, providing essential support to surgeons and other medical professionals during surgical procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in preparing the operating room for procedures, including gathering supplies and equipment.
  • Anticipate and respond to the needs of the surgeon, ensuring all required supplies are available.
  • Provide a clean, safe, and efficient environment for optimal patient care, utilizing aseptic surgical techniques.
  • Ensure the environmental disinfection, safety, and efficiency of the operating room, including setting up the room for each case and operating equipment.
  • Act as a resource and assist in the training of Surgical Technologists and new Surgical Assistants.
  • May perform specific surgical activities under the direct supervision of the surgeon, including wound closure and patient positioning.
  • May perform specific validated competencies and surgical activities, such as applying tourniquets and securing drains, under general supervision.
  • Provide competency confirmation by a sponsoring surgeon and submit documentation for approval and/or renewal.
  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.

Requirements:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • Surgical Technologist (CST) certification issued by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) within 12 months.
  • Surgical First Assist (CSFA) certification issued by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) within 12 months.
  • Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) issued by the National Surgical Assistant Association (NSAA) within 12 months.
  • Advanced training beyond High School in Surgical Technology.
  • Typically requires 3 years of experience in a Surgical Technologist or Surgical Assistant position.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to withstand a very stressful and fast-paced environment.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist, lift up to 20 lbs. over the head, and carry up to 40 lbs. a reasonable distance.
  • Must be able to push/pull with 30 lbs. of force, perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs. with a second person present, and use foot pedals on carts or machines.
  • Exposed to mechanical, electrical, chemical, radiation, blood, and body fluids on a continuous basis.
  • Must have functional sight and hearing, and be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, reach above shoulders, and twist frequently during work shift.
