Job Summary:

As a Respiratory Therapist at Brown University Health, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality patient care and contributing to the success of our Respiratory Care Department. Under the supervision of the Manager or Lead Therapist, you will administer respiratory care to patients, obtain and analyze blood gas specimens, and perform sleep studies and pulmonary function tests as ordered by a physician. Your expertise will be essential in fostering patient and family-centered care and healthcare services in accordance with our hospital's mission, vision, and values.

Responsibilities:

• Administer respiratory care in accordance with physician orders or protocol, ensuring the highest level of patient safety and satisfaction.
• Accept and enter verbal and telephonic orders from physicians into patient charts, maintaining accurate and up-to-date records.
• Set up and operate devices, aerosol generators, and bedside pulmonary function testing equipment, ensuring proper functioning and maintenance.
• Monitor equipment to ensure specific parameters are maintained, identifying and reporting any issues or malfunctions.
• Perform chest physiotherapy and bronchopulmonary drainage procedures, providing relief and comfort to patients.
• Assist patients with breathing exercises utilizing incentive spirometry, promoting optimal lung function and recovery.
• Instruct patients and families in therapeutic modalities and equipment use, empowering them to take an active role in their care.
• Monitor the physiologic response of patients to therapy and suggest therapy changes, ensuring the best possible outcomes.
• Maintain patient charts, entering therapy, ventilator, and monitoring information, and ensuring accurate and timely documentation.
• Inspect and test respiratory therapy-related equipment to ensure proper operating condition, identifying and reporting any issues or malfunctions.
• Notify the Manager or Lead Therapist of the need for equipment repairs, ensuring timely maintenance and replacement.
• Perform arterial punctures to obtain blood samples for gas analysis, analyzing and reporting results, and calibrating and performing preventive maintenance and quality control procedures on blood gas instrumentation.
• As assigned, perform all tests and duties in the Pulmonary Function Laboratory that relate to pulmonary function tests and sleep studies, recording results and forwarding to physicians for interpretation.
• Maintain logs of required information on tests performed and related records and reports, ensuring accurate and timely documentation.
• Consult with physicians regarding the appropriateness of tests ordered and test results, providing expert guidance and support.
• Clean, make minor repairs, and maintain pulmonary function and sleep study equipment, ensuring optimal performance and safety.
• Prepare and revise written procedures for sleep study and pulmonary function testing, ensuring compliance with hospital policies and procedures.
• Order laboratory supplies, ensuring timely and accurate delivery of essential materials.
• Participate in Code Blue emergencies by providing cardiopulmonary resuscitation, airway management, and ventilatory support, demonstrating expertise and composure in high-pressure situations.
• Assist in the evaluation of replacement respiratory and pulmonary function equipment, ensuring the best possible outcomes for patients.
• Assist in care and maintenance of equipment and supplies, promoting a safe and efficient work environment.
• Attend and participate in staff meetings and in-service education sessions, staying up-to-date on the latest developments and best practices in respiratory care.
• Maintain various records and reports as required, ensuring accurate and timely documentation.
• Maintain quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control standards in accordance with established hospital and departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.

Requirements:

• Associates Degree in an AMA-approved respiratory therapy program.
• Must be licensed by the State of Rhode Island as a Respiratory Care Practitioner.
• Interpersonal skills to instruct and calm patients.
• Analytic skills to interpret blood gas reports, calculate results of pulmonary function tests, and synthesize interrelated data from various medical disciplines.
• Leadership ability to establish priorities, assign work to practitioners when assigned charge responsibilities, and instruct students.
• Ability to operate all respiratory therapy and diagnostic testing equipment.
• All essential functions performed in this position reflect the age-specific needs of the patients.

Preferred Experience:

One year of experience as a respiratory therapist preferred.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

Prolonged sitting, standing, and walking.
Exposed to all patient elements.
May be required to lift/turn patients and equipment.
Repeated bending, squatting, and stooping.
Sufficient visual acuity and manual dexterity to use computer keyboard and other common office equipment.
Any hazards are minimized by adherence to established safety procedures and precautions.

Supervisory Responsibility:

May provide functional or technical supervision as a charge therapist where scope of responsibility is limited to occasional direction, guidance, and explanation (refer to Respiratory Therapy Department Policy for complete list of responsibilities).
