We are seeking a visionary leader with strong scientific and research credentials to lead the Board on Environmental Change and Society (BECS). As the Director, you will develop and maintain an impactful, interdisciplinary portfolio of projects/programs, establishing a vision and working strategy for studies and activities conducted within the program/board.

You will oversee the management of numerous complex projects, assemble or oversee the boards, volunteer committees, and/or study panels and their staff, and provide oversight and guidance to the conduct of their work. You will also provide leadership to and management of staff, mentor staff, and train and develop employees to successfully perform current responsibilities and encourage development of staff for future roles.

The Director will work closely with a group of top scientific and other technical experts who volunteer their time to advise on the work of the Board. You will also lead and build a team of smart, talented, mission-driven staff who care deeply about the work they do.

The National Academies' Board on Environmental Change and Society is the primary voice for advancing research on the interactions between human activities and the environment, providing a vital forum for linking the social and natural sciences in research, planning, and decision-making.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop and maintain an impactful, interdisciplinary portfolio of projects/programs.
  • Establish a vision and working strategy for studies and activities conducted within the program/board.
  • Oversee the management of numerous complex projects.
  • Assemble or oversee the boards, volunteer committees, and/or study panels and their staff.
  • Provide oversight and guidance to the conduct of their work.
  • Provide leadership to and management of staff.
  • Mentor staff and train and develop employees to successfully perform current responsibilities.
  • Encourage development of staff for future roles.
  • Maintain communication and productive working relationships with program volunteers.
  • Set agenda and oversee meeting arrangements.
  • Oversee financial management of the unit.
  • Participate in business planning, conduct status meetings, coordinate logistical issues, and implement planning, scheduling, and procedural changes.
  • Responsible for program/project development.
  • Maintain current and develop new relationships with prospective sponsors and other external contacts.
  • Respond to requests for studies/projects, developing and negotiating scope of work, budgets, and project staffing.
  • Engage in sponsor outreach; negotiate funding with sponsors and prepare prospectuses and proposals.
  • Oversee the report process during writing, reports review, and release, if applicable.
  • Oversee outreach efforts, including project dissemination.
  • Conduct speaking engagements on behalf of the boards and the institution to raise the profile of the boards' past, current, and future work.
Requirements:
  • Ph.D. in topic area, a related field, or equivalent knowledge.
  • Minimum 10 years of related professional experience, 5 of which were in a supervisory capacity.
  • Experience working in complex environments with a high degree of organizational effectiveness.
  • Ability to solve intellectual problems that reflect substantial variety and complexity.
  • Excellent communication skills with a proven ability to respectfully interact with all levels of employees.
  • Understanding of the National Academies' mission and culture.
  • Experience with environmental justice or equity, and/or evidence-based community-engaged work a plus.
Work Environment:

Hybrid Office/Telecommute environment, expected onsite percentage currently 40%, with occasional travel.
