Medical Support Assistant

This Medical Support Assistant position is located in the Office of Community Care of the Gulf Coast Veterans Health Care System in Biloxi, MS.
Responsibilities- Process incoming patient secure messaging through My HealthyVet and coordinate with care teams to manage, plan, problem solve, and follow up with Veteran care by sharing information and collaborating with the interdisciplinary team.
- Set priorities and deadlines, assist the team to reinforce the plan of care and self-help solutions, evaluate patient information and clinic schedules to determine whether the patient requires an immediate appointment, and inform team members about shared patients.
- Perform front desk duties, receive telephone calls, and visitors to the MSA unit, consult with clinic staff when processing physician scheduling and administrative orders, and utilize computer systems to enter administrative data in patient systems.
- Learn and utilize basic medical terminology to record patient messages and physician requests pertaining to follow-up medical care, and refer patients to other medical specialty clinics, provide information to patients necessary to resolve VA Handbook complaints, and review and document medical outpatient and inpatient electronic health records.
- One year of experience in clerical, office, customer service, or other administrative work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position.
- Ability to meet, communicate, and interact with individuals from varying backgrounds, ability to use, and navigate between, various types of office automation, knowledge of basic medical terminology, and skill in recording patient messages and understanding physician requests.
- Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process, and participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
This is a full-time position, Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:00pm CST, and the selected candidate will be required to work independently in the accomplishment of a wide variety of duties performing patient support work.
Benefits- Competitive salary and regular salary increases, paid time off, 37-50 days of annual paid time off per year, 13 days of sick leave, and 11 paid Federal holidays per year.
- After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child, and childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.
- Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA, and federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care insurance.
