Job Summary: We are seeking a highly skilled Code Enforcement Officer to join our team at New Castle County, DE. As a Code Enforcement Officer, you will be responsible for conducting investigations and ensuring compliance with all County codes and related ordinances. You will perform field investigations, research codes and ordinances, and notify violators of code violations. You will also confer with violators, attorneys, judges, and other governmental agencies, and follow up on code violations to ensure correction and compliance.

Responsibilities:
  • Perform field investigations and prepare related reports.
  • Research codes and ordinances in regard to alleged violations.
  • Notify violators of code violations and code provisions.
  • Confer with violators, attorneys, judges, and other governmental agencies.
  • Follow up on code violations to ensure correction and compliance.
  • Collect evidence and prosecute code violators in court.
  • Appear in court to testify as a witness when necessary.
  • Prepare and issue summonses to appear in court.
  • Serve summonses on violators when necessary.
  • Obtain, compile, and organize data.
  • Answer inquiries regarding code violations and provide advice on code compliance.
  • Post stop work orders and condemnation notices when necessary.


Requirements:
  • At least three (3) years of experience in work related to building, property maintenance codes, construction related work, community relations, Constable, Court or Correctional Officer/enforcement experience, or (3) years investigative experience.
  • Possession of a high school diploma or GED.
  • Possession of a valid Delaware Class D driver's license or its equivalent.
  • Successful completion of the ICC required discipline: ICC 64 (Property Maintenance & Housing Inspector) within six months of date of hire or promotion.
