Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Laboratory Support Specialist to join our team at the University of Maryland Medical System. As a Laboratory Support Specialist, you will play a critical role in ensuring the smooth operation of our laboratory services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collect blood samples from patients using venipunctures or finger or heel sticks, while maintaining the highest standards of patient safety and comfort.
  • Process all samples within the department, either manually or using automation equipment, including send-outs.
  • Utilize a computerized system for logging and tracking specimen collection and patient information.
  • Properly identify and label specimens for processing, delivery, and storage.
  • Perform accurate and complete order entry and order checking of requisitions for proper data entry.
  • Operate simple medical laboratory equipment, such as a centrifuge and microscope.
  • Effectively communicate with laboratory and medical staff to resolve problems and concerns regarding specimens and to properly identify and label specimens for processing, delivery, or storage.
  • Monitor pending work and resolve specimen issues as needed.
  • Sort laboratory reports and distribute them to appropriate mailboxes.
  • Perform inventory and ordering of supplies, including requisitions for distribution to clients.
  • Fulfill all supply requests for client needs.
  • Respond to telephone inquiries for test results, specimen status, or other general inquiries.
  • Communicate abnormal values to providers as necessary.
  • Assist with training new team members as needed.
  • Perform maintenance and troubleshoot instruments as needed.
  • Register patients in EPIC and enter orders in both LIS and HIS.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need to have a strong understanding of laboratory procedures and protocols, as well as excellent communication and organizational skills.
