Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Plant Maintenance Mechanic to join our team in North Durham. As a key member of our Water Management department, you will be responsible for conducting preventative maintenance services on all mechanical systems, equipment, and components. Your expertise will be essential in identifying equipment maintenance needs and entering work orders into our Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).

This role requires a strong working knowledge of water treatment and reclamation facilities or power plant systems and equipment. You will work collaboratively with Plant Engineering and Maintenance staff to coordinate corrective maintenance activities and maintain preventative maintenance logs on all equipment and systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Performs preventative and corrective mechanical maintenance, using specialized equipment, tools, and machinery to repair and rebuild pumps, motors, gearboxes, and other equipment and facility components.
  • Inspects, tests, and cleans equipment, alarms, and related equipment to ensure proper working condition and compliance with applicable safety and operating regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Performs office and operational support duties, such as receiving work orders, stocking vehicles with necessary supplies and tools for work, maintaining databases and records, cleaning and/or washing down the work area, performing emergency or on-call duties, maintaining inventory, answering phones, and training lower-level staff.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED, HiSET, TASC)
  • Minimum of two years of related experience, such as plant operations, equipment, tools & lubricants
  • Valid, unrestricted, North Carolina driver's license or willingness and ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
  • Additional on-the-job and/or safety-related certifications as required by the City
  • Ability to read and interpret manuals, blueprints, written and oral instructions
  • Ability and willingness to work a rotation and serve standby / recall for emergencies often during inclement weather
Preferred Qualifications
  • One-year experience with a CMMS program
  • Experience in an industrial, manufacturing, or water utility setting
  • OSHA Lock Out/Tag Out training
  • AWWA Maintenance Technologist certification
  • Grade I or II Wastewater Operator certification
  • Thorough knowledge and application of OSHA safety procedures/protocols
