Job Title: Public Health Technician, Bureau of Food Safety and Community Sanitation

Join the City of New York's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene as a Public Health Technician in the Bureau of Food Safety and Community Sanitation. As a key member of our team, you will play a vital role in protecting the public's health and safety by conducting inspections, enforcing regulations, and providing education and outreach to the community.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct inspections of food service establishments, commercial establishments, and places of employment to ensure compliance with health codes and regulations.
  • Enforce provisions of the Smoke-Free Air Act and other tobacco-related regulations to create a smoke-free environment and reduce access to tobacco products for minors.
  • Review menus and menu boards to ensure compliance with nutritional requirements and reduce chronic diseases and obesity.
  • Prepare and serve court summonses for specific violations of applicable City and State laws and regulations.
  • Testify at Office of Trials and Hearings and other courts as required.
  • Travel throughout the five boroughs using mass transit.
Requirements:
  • An Associate Degree or 60 credits from an accredited college with at least twelve credits in the physical or biological sciences; or
  • High School graduation or its equivalent, plus three years of satisfactory, full-time paid experience conducting environmental health inspections; or
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2". However, all candidates must possess a high school diploma or its equivalent.
Preferred Skills:
  • Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office and other relevant software.
Residency Requirement:

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
