About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Design Engineer to join our team at Caterpillar Inc. in Lafayette, Indiana. As a key member of our engineering team, you will be responsible for leading the design, development, and validation of our G3500 engines through various processes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead design architecture team meetings to ensure effective collaboration and communication.
  • Participate in functional specification and Quality Function Deployment (QFD) development for new product introduction (NPI) programs.
  • Manage program bills of materials (BOMs), job tickets (JTs), and development to support lab and field builds for NPI, kitting, and lifecycle engineering and product introduction (LEPI) programs.
  • Support the development, release, and maintenance of field upgrade kits for G3500 engine product.
  • Coordinate virtual and on-engine safety and serviceability audits to ensure compliance and follow-up activities.
  • Propose and investigate design alternatives and coordinate with level 3 (L3) teams to develop and drive architectural changes on G3500 engine product.
  • Responsible for proof design parts management, ordering, shipping, etc. to support prototype builds, lab, or field testing.
  • Provide support for following prototype engines/packages down the assembly line and ensure that issues get initiated in myNPI to be worked.
  • Participate in Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) and Value FMEA (VFMEA) at the L3, L4, and L5 levels.
  • Create and/or populate technical specification documents from functional specifications as required to cascade to L3 and L4 teams.
  • Support lab testing through troubleshooting engine issues, coordinating with L3 teams, and supplying the lab with consumables and replacement parts in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with other groups (engineering, marketing, purchasing, etc.) as necessary.
Requirements
  • 4-year degree in engineering or engineering technology.
  • Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work well under pressure.
  • Knowledge of computer-aided design and engineering (CAD/CAE) tools and techniques.
  • Experience with product design, manufacturing, and development.
  • Strong data analysis and interpretation skills.
  • Ability to work well independently and as a collaborative member of a cross-functional team.
  • Large gas and/or diesel troubleshooting skills.
  • Understanding of Caterpillar engine product configuration.
  • Caterpillar 6 Sigma training.
  • Familiarity with CSA, EU, and API standards.
  • Knowledge of SAP.
  • Proficiency working with computers and computer systems.
