Job Description

Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled State Government Relations Director to join our team at the American Heart Association. As a key member of our advocacy team, you will be responsible for building and maintaining relationships with state government officials, identifying and advancing policy priorities, and developing and implementing effective advocacy strategies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement advocacy strategies to advance policy priorities at the state level
  • Build and maintain relationships with state government officials, including legislators, their staff, and other key stakeholders
  • Identify and analyze policy issues affecting the American Heart Association's mission and develop effective advocacy responses
  • Develop and maintain coalitions and partnerships with other organizations to advance policy priorities
  • Provide policy research and analysis to support advocacy efforts
  • Develop and implement grassroots and media advocacy tactics to advance policy priorities
  • Prepare and submit required reporting information, including lobbying reports

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Public Policy, Political Science, Law, or related field
  • Minimum of three years of experience in legislative and regulatory lobbying, coalition building, and grassroots and media advocacy
  • Strong policy analysis and technical writing skills
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects and work under time constraints
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to travel overnight approximately 25% of the time

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of voluntary health organizations or nonprofit organizations
  • Experience working in health care policy
  • Experience in volunteer management
  • Understanding and appreciation for the use of technology and information systems
