Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Accounting Clerk II to perform a wide range of bookkeeping and records maintenance duties. The successful candidate will specialize in Utility Billing and work closely with the Finance Director and/or Finance Manager to ensure accurate and timely financial transactions.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Contribute to a positive work environment and maintain a positive relationship with contacts specific to the position and outside the City organization.
  • Maintain customer accounts through telephone, counter, and mail contact, post and balance utility cash and receipts, prepare water and sewer billings, operate data processing equipment, and maintain senior/low-income discounts.
  • Collect delinquent accounts, request water service disconnects and reconnects, and coordinate meter readings with meter-readers and the Public Works Department.
  • Perform front counter coverage, serve as cashier receiving, posting, balancing, and preparing fines, fees, and other payments for daily bank deposits.
  • Assist with Accounts Payable and Payroll as assigned, provide task oversight as a lead worker of Accounting Clerks in regards to data entry and cashiering, and administer business licenses.
  • Responsible for the petty cash box, billing and collection of utility bills, assessments, and business licenses, and maintain accurate records.
Requirements:
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent GED certificate supplemented by college or business school training in bookkeeping, accounting, or computer sciences.
  • Formal training in public relations or customer service, answering telephones, and doing collection work is desirable.
  • Training in LEDS computer is desirable, and LEDS certification is required for this position and can be accomplished after hire date.
  • Three to four years of experience preferably in a governmental agency, at least two of which consist of performing clerical and general bookkeeping or accounting duties at the Accounting Clerk I level.
  • Experience working with the public in situations that may be adversarial, i.e., collections, is required.
  • Two years of experience working with computers and computerized accounting systems is desirable.
