Emergency Room Assistant

As an Emergency Room Assistant at Kaiser Permanente, you will play a vital role in providing exceptional patient care in our Emergency Department. Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, you will perform routine patient care duties, assist in treatment rooms, and contribute to a collaborative team environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide high-quality patient care, adhering to all standards of nursing care and promoting teamwork among colleagues.
- Assist patients with general health and basic self-care procedures, ensuring their comfort and well-being.
- Review, explain, and clarify physician orders with patients or parents, promoting clear communication and understanding.
- Administer patient first aid, apply orthopedic appliances, and apply and remove dressings as needed.
- Execute treatments such as urinary catheterizations, bladder irrigations, and installations, suctioning procedures, throat irrigations, and follow standard infection control procedures.
- Give enemas, initiate emergency procedures (including CPR), and provide emergency patient treatment as required.
- Observe machine monitors, perform inhalation therapy and surgical preps, prepare and position patients for procedures, and respond to Code Blues.
- Take and record patient vital signs, height, weight, and other essential information, as well as obtain patient specimens and prepare samples for lab analysis.
- Perform waived testing, including blood glucose, urine dip, and pregnancy testing, and check patients' vision using a Snellen chart.
- Assist physicians in obtaining tissue specimens and biopsies, restrain or support patients during procedures, select and pass instruments, and deliver food trays to patients.
- Record all procedures and activities during emergencies, transport patients to and from designated areas, route specimens to the laboratory, and transport laboratory specimens and procedures trays.
- Ensure equipment is available for procedures and examinations, assemble and disassemble equipment and instruments, check and stock emergency supply charts, and check that defibrillators are working.
- Set up and organize exam rooms, select instruments and equipment, set up instruments and surgical trays, stock and restock treatment and procedure rooms, rinse and clean instruments and equipment, and maintain a clean work area.
- Train and orient new or less experienced personnel, answer call lights, answer the nurses' station telephone, answer telephones and take messages, locate personnel by paging system or existing technology, and assume other activities and responsibilities as directed.
Experience
- Minimum of six months (1,040 hours) experience in Hospital Acute Care, in the field, or in an Emergency Department as an EMT or Paramedic.
- Per the National Agreement, current KP Coalition employees have this experience requirement waived.

- Paramedic Certificate (California) OR Emergency Medical Technician Certificate (California)
- Basic Life Support
- Good verbal and written communications skills required. Knowledge of PC or mainframe computer system (or will train).
- Competency performing 12 lead EKG.
- Knowledge of sterile technique.
- Bilingual preferred.
- Every other weekend
