Shipyard Machinist

Gulf Marine Repair is seeking a skilled Outside Machinist to join our team. As an Outside Machinist, you will be responsible for the assembly, installation, modification, and repair of various surface ship machinery and systems.

You will set up, service, repair, align, and test machines that operate on a mechanical and electro-mechanical basis. Skilled with precision measuring tools such as dial calipers, micrometers, and stack height gauges, you will perform all machining tasks with exactness.

Key responsibilities include performing major overhauls on and rebuilding diesel, gas, and air compressors. You will disassemble, reassemble, and test towing winch components, mooring winches, capstans, and anchor windlasses as well as hydraulic and mechanical cranes. Additionally, you will remove and reinstall generators. You will also perform all types of major alignments on components such as gearboxes and engine shafts.

Requirements

• 3 years of machining experience is preferred
• General knowledge about ships and machinery is required
• Knowledge about gearboxes is essential
• Ability to rig any and all props, shafts, generators, pumps, and engines
• Ability to align pumps to motors
• Ability to remove and reinstall generators
• Ability to take readings on props, shafts, and bearings
• Ability to pass a drug test
• Have basic hand tools

Shipyard experience is preferred but multiple factors will be taken into consideration. If you are self-motivated and reliable, with a willingness to learn, and take pride in doing quality work, you might be the perfect candidate for this important shipyard job.

Work Schedule

This is a full-time machining position that works 40+ hours per week. The 1st shift typically runs from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM and the 2nd shift from 4:30 PM to 1:00 AM. Evenings and weekends are required when needed.
