Director of Operations

The Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Virginia seeks a highly skilled Director of Operations to oversee the department's administrative functions. As a key member of the department's leadership team, the Director of Operations will play a critical role in ensuring the smooth operation of the department's daily activities.
Responsibilities:- Develop and implement short- and long-term strategic goals that align with the department's objectives in partnership with the department chair and leadership team.
- Serve as a senior leader on the department's leadership team, providing guidance and support to the team.
- Collaborate with various stakeholders, including Engineering and University partners, to achieve departmental goals.
- Formulate and improve departmental procedures to ensure compliance with School of Engineering and University policies and regulations.
- Oversee the department's financial reports and ensure accuracy and compliance with financial policies and guidelines.
- Develop and manage the annual budget in alignment with the department's strategic plan.
- Hire, mentor, and manage the performance of department staff, developing and implementing staffing plans to resource priority programs.
- Ensure completion of workflows, including faculty and staff merit increases, faculty promotion and tenure, faculty, staff, and student hiring and onboarding, and annual evaluations.
- Collaborate with various stakeholders to promote the efficient use of space within the department.
- Oversee the IT needs of the department and ensure appropriate support from partner groups.
- Remain current on emergency preparedness activities in the School and the University.
- A Bachelor's degree is required; a Master's degree is preferred.
- Eight years of increasingly responsible management and administrative duties is required.
- At least two years of supervisory and management experience with a team is required; four years of supervisory and management experience is preferred.
- Experience in academic administration or as a department manager in a higher education setting is preferred.
- A demonstrated history of managing and coordinating multiple priorities and projects across academic and business areas is required.
- Proficiency with Outlook, Microsoft Office, Zoom, and Adobe Acrobat is required.
- Proficiency with Workday HR and Financials, Student Information Systems, Box, building access, or similar programs experience is preferred.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
