Polysomnography Technician Specialist

A Polysomnographic Staff Technician plays a vital role in the comprehensive testing and analysis of patients' sleep patterns. Working under the technical supervision of a Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) and/or the clinical director, this individual conducts polysomnographic procedures utilizing national, state, AAST, AASM, Infection Control, and departmental guidelines.
Responsibilities- Gathers and reviews patient information to identify specific needs and determine final testing parameters/procedures in conjunction with ordering physicians or clinical directors and laboratory protocols.
- Demonstrates effective communication skills through positive interaction with patients to obtain interpretable test results and improve long-term compliance with therapy.
- Completes and verifies documentation and writes detailed technical reports to aid physicians in interpreting collected information.
- Orients patients to the sleep center and explains the procedure.
- Prepares and calibrates equipment required for testing to ensure proper functioning and makes adjustments if necessary.
- Applies electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards and performs physiologic calibrations to ensure proper signals.
- Conducts polysomnographic procedures by following procedural protocols, such as Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), parasomnia studies, PAP, oxygen titration, etc., to ensure collection of appropriate data.
- Successful completion of a polysomnography, respiratory, or neurophysiology program from a state-licensed and nationally accredited educational facility.
- Minimum 6 months of experience as a Polysomnographic Trainee with documented proficiency in all required competencies or two or more years working in sleep disorders medicine or respiratory therapy/neurophysiology.
- Maintain current CPR, BCLS, CRTT, or RRT certification and CEUs where applicable.
The estimated annual salary for this position is around $65,000 - $80,000, depending on location and experience.
