Seattle, Washington, United States Blue Origin Full time

We're seeking a seasoned Manufacturing Engineering Manager to support the development and operations of our New Glenn launch vehicle, a single-configuration, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar, and beyond.

This role will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable space flight.

You will assemble project teams, identify appropriate resources needed, and develop schedules to ensure accurate completion of projects.

You will also assess risks, anticipate bottlenecks, provide escalation management, make tradeoffs, and encourage risk-taking behavior to improve safety and quality, reduce cost, and optimize manufacturing processes.

We put a strong emphasis on solutions which are data-driven and cognizant of details.

You will work to improve all aspects of the manufacturing process with your team with the expectation for identifying, developing, and deploying methods to increase safety, improve quality, reduce cost, and optimize build sequence and schedules.

The company celebrates strong collaboration, outstanding and innovative solutions, and passion for success.

We are searching for a proactive, service-oriented individual to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight.

Responsibilities:

  • Balance priorities across the team of Manufacturing Engineers supporting hydraulic, cryogenic, and pneumatic systems.
  • Coordinate and work closely with program managers to meet design, build, and test milestones for launch vehicles.
  • Apply robust, consistent, and reliable engineering fundamentals and processes to ensure the highest quality of manufacturing engineering.
  • Review and understand companywide processes and command media to ensure proper compliance.
  • Develop new advanced manufacturing processes.
  • Define how to prepare hardware for test, qualification, and flight.
  • Drive research and development hardware into a repeatable production product.
  • Identify, develop, and deploy new manufacturing methods (or refine existing) to improve quality, reduce cost, and optimize build schedule.
  • Develop manufacturing work instructions to clearly define the following manufacturing process: receiving inspection, fabrication, assembly, test, integration, and refurbishment.
  • Closely manage cost, quality, build sequence, and schedule of hardware and subassemblies throughout the entire manufacturing process.
  • Perform engineering drawing review and drive manufacturability into designs.
  • Develop process control measures and evaluation through statistical analysis.
  • Define and support repair and rework activities.
  • Design, procure, install, and integrate custom manufacturing equipment.
  • Ability to develop processes compliant to industry quality systems such as AS9100.
  • Support capacity analysis and evaluate staffing requirements.
  • Lead root cause analyses when non-conformances and escapes are identified and deploy corrective actions.
  • Lead teams in defining proper material handling and packaging to protect hardware throughout the build and test process.
  • Manage hardware configuration and maintain pedigree throughout the entire build and test process.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Passion for our mission: Millions of people living and working in space
  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Aerospace Engineering (other relevant fields may apply) from an accredited university.
  • 8+ years of direct manufacturing or engineering operations experience supporting mission critical valves, pressurized systems, and acceptance testing.
  • Mastery of engineering fundamentals for mechanical design and manufacturing.
  • Extensive experience in hardware manufacturing (i.e. welding, machining, cleaning, non-destructive testing methods, tight tolerance assembly, leak testing, and Manufacturing Execution Systems/Software).
  • Over five years of leadership experience overseeing and guiding teams, projects, and programs.
  • Strong coordination, personnel, and project management skills.
  • Ability to operate, make decisions, lead, and make forward progress in ambiguous environments.
  • Understanding of product lifecycle management.
  • Proven experience and successful track record developing/starting new manufacturing processes.
  • Strong written, personal, technical, and software skills (CAD, Scheduling, Issue Tracking, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc).
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with Maintenance Refurbishment Operations (MRO) of high-performance hardware.
  • Master's of Business Administration (MBA) or advanced engineering degree (MS, MEng).
  • Experience using schedule management tools such as P6 Primavera.
  • Six Sigma, Lean Six Sigma, MSG-3, 5-S, FMEA, PRA, and lean process awareness.
  • Ability to operate, make decisions, lead, and make forward progress in ambiguous environments.
  • Experience using statistics to drive data-based decision making.
  • Experience with root cause analysis investigation encompassing cross-functional teams.
  • Experience with quality actions especially as related to new product introduction.

Benefits:

Benefits include: Medical, dental, vision, basic and supplemental life insurance, paid parental leave, short and long-term disability, 401(k) with a company match of up to 5%, and an Education Support Program.
