Job Summary

This is a challenging and rewarding opportunity to join the Contra Costa Community College District as a Senior Science Laboratory Coordinator. In this role, you will be responsible for planning, organizing, and coordinating laboratory activities for multiple science disciplines and/or large laboratory departments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan and coordinate large department laboratory operations for a variety of science disciplines.
  • Maintain and store a sufficient inventory of scientific supplies and equipment in laboratory facilities; procure supplies and equipment; research products and analyze bids; identify need for repair or external assistance and requisition as necessary; assemble, test, and install new equipment and instruments.
  • Provide technical lead support and serve as a resource to faculty, students, and staff.
  • Direct or perform the timely preparation, set-up, and issuing of materials, equipment, and lockers for use in student laboratory demonstrations, experiments, exercises, and exams.
  • Perform complex skilled technical duties to ensure efficient lab operations.
  • Develop and implement new or modified laboratory policies, as required.
  • Recommend environmental, health, and safety-related improvements and modifications in laboratory procedures and operations; establish and enforce laboratory safety procedures; routinely inspect and/or test safety equipment and supplies.
  • Monitor production of, collect, and appropriately process hazardous waste materials and toxic chemicals resulting from laboratory classes; collect and properly store biohazard waste.
  • Maintain material safety data sheets for all department chemicals and products.
  • Provide appropriate student safety training; maintain records of training.
  • Assist in developing and monitoring department budgets in coordination with management and faculty; prepare cost estimates for budget recommendations; submit justifications for budget items; maintain student billing records.
  • Coordinate workload of multiple or large department laboratories; monitor assignments of other assigned staff.
  • Collaborate with management and faculty to identify part-time staffing needs.
  • Conduct statistical review to analyze and assess the service effectiveness in assigned laboratories.
  • Assist in the selection of student assistants and/or tutors; provide training, functional, and technical supervision, and evaluation of student assistants and/or tutors; review and approve student assistant and/or tutor timecards for accuracy and submit to a departmental supervisor or manager.
Requirements
  • Three (3) years of responsible experience coordinating a laboratory in a college, public health, hospital, clinical, or research setting performing discipline-specific tests and processes, including experience in workplace safety.
  • Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college in a discipline relevant to assigned areas, or equivalent.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Red Cross First Aid and CPR certificate.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, Cal OSHA Certification.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Support the operations of the Biological Sciences labs.
  • Understand the function of, operate, demonstrate, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and calibrate technical instruments found in a biology setting.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision and be able to delegate tasks to other workers. Collaborate effectively with Biology department faculty and staff to enable student success.
