Postdoctoral Position, Biogeochemical Fluxes Specialist
2 days ago
Company Overview
The MPOWIR Mentoring Physical Oceanography Women to Increase Retention team at the University of Washington invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in our School of Oceanography. Our research groups, led by Dr. C. Deutsch and Dr. A. Gray, focus on understanding ocean dynamics and biogeochemical processes. We seek a highly motivated individual to work with us on a project investigating three-dimensional transport pathways and biogeochemical fluxes in the Southern Ocean using autonomous ocean observations and models.
Salary
We offer a competitive salary of $65,000 - $70,000 per year, commensurate with experience, plus benefits.
Job Description
This is a full-time (100% FTE), 12-months/year appointment with an initial term of one year (12 months), renewable depending on satisfactory performance for a total period of up to 3 years. The successful candidate will work closely with our team to analyze observational data and model output, investigate mechanisms operating at meso- to submesoscale resolution that generate exchange across the base of the mixed layer, and communicate results through scientific manuscripts and presentations. Opportunities for collaboration with an interdisciplinary group of scientists and engagement with the multi-institution Southern Ocean Carbon and Climate Observations and Modeling (SOCCOM) project are also available.
Required Skills and Qualifications
We require a Ph.D. or foreign equivalent in oceanography or a related field. Strong physical, mathematical, and/or computational background, programming experience in at least one general-purpose language, demonstrated written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively with individuals from diverse backgrounds are essential. Submesoscale ocean physics, autonomous ocean observations, and high-resolution ocean modeling are desirable areas of expertise.
Benefits
Professional development opportunities will be provided through the University of Washington Office of Postdoctoral Affairs. Our team values diversity and inclusion, and we strive to create a welcoming environment for all researchers.
