Job Summary:

The Port Authority of NY & NJ is seeking a skilled Automotive Mechanic to join our team. As an Automotive Mechanic, you will be responsible for performing complex automotive work involving inspections, modifications, maintenance, and repairs on a diverse fleet of vehicles, including gas, diesel, hybrid, and electric vehicles.

Responsibilities:

  • Diagnose and repair complex automotive issues, including car/truck repairs, air conditioner, axle & transaxle, airbrakes, and auxiliary and control systems.
  • Conduct thorough inspections of mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems.
  • Perform maintenance and repairs on complex automotive and special equipment.

Requirements:

  • High School diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
  • Three years' journey-level experience in performing skilled automotive work involving inspection, diagnosis, modification, maintenance, and repair on complex automotive and other special equipment.
  • New York State and/or New Jersey State Emissions Inspector License (selected applicants without this license must obtain within six months of hire for continued employment).
  • Valid driver license with the ability to obtain a valid Class A Commercial Driver's (CDL) Permit with the air brakes endorsement or higher before the first day of work and will be required to obtain a Class A CDL License with endorsements within three months of employment.

Selection Process:

Qualified candidates will be assessed via a written exam and a practical exam. The written exam will assess candidates' knowledge in areas such as combustion engines, electrical systems, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, hydraulic brake systems, steering and suspension systems, light and heavy-duty truck repair, hybrid vehicle technology, and late model vehicle technology. The practical exam will measure a candidate's knowledge in areas such as mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and/or electrical/electronic inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, and repair.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey offers an outstanding benefits package and a professional environment that supports development and recognizes achievement. The starting salary for the Auto Mechanic is $86,266.44 annually. Auto Mechanics are eligible for step increases (subject to collective bargaining agreement).
