Utility Locate Technician

Job Summary: We are seeking a skilled Utility Locate Technician to join our team at the City of Albany, GA. As a Utility Locate Technician, you will be responsible for correctly locating, identifying, and marking underground utility, gas, and water lines.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Locate, identify, and mark underground utility, gas, and water lines/mains.
  • Read, analyze, interpret, and draft plans and maps.
  • Organize daily ticket routing to achieve maximum efficiency; review tickets before and after all locates.
  • Operate department vehicle safely and lawfully.
  • Maintain and store records of locates for the appropriate span of time.
  • Identify and report faulty leaks to appropriate staff.
  • Operate a variety of equipment, machinery, and tools, including a pipe horn and cable locator, metal detector/locator, shovel, probe rod, sledge hammer, striping machine/equipment, level survey rod, computer, fax machine, calculator, etc.
  • Perform general maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment, and tools in operable condition.
  • Monitor equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; report faulty equipment.
  • Prepare and/or complete various forms, correspondence, reports, work sheets, timesheets, and other documents.
  • Receive various forms, reports, work sheets, maps, or other documentation; review, complete, process, forward, and/or maintain as appropriate.
  • Communicate via telephone and/or two-way radio; provide information; take and relay messages; respond to requests for service.
  • Respond to routine requests for information from employees, officials, the public, or other individuals.
  • Provide emergency assistance and/or backup coverage to other employees or departments as needed.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED; supplemented by three (3) to five (5) years previous experience and/or technical training in utility construction and/or engineering plans.
  • Wastewater Class III Collection Systems Certification desirable.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver's License.

  • Physical Ability: Tasks involve regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that generally involve lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials.
  • Sensory Requirements: Some tasks may require the ability to perceive and discern colors or shades of colors, sounds, odors, depths, textures. Some tasks require visual perception and discernment.
  • Environmental Factors: Tasks risk exposure to such adverse environmental conditions as high pressure gas & water lines, fiber optic cables, insects, poisonous plants, animals, dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, traffic hazards, toxic agents and chemicals, electric currents, disease, raw sewage, blood, or pathogenic substances.
