Job Summary

Shelter House is seeking a dedicated Cold Weather Service Coordinator to support the operation of our temporary Hypothermia program between November 15 and March 31. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for ensuring the smooth running of the program and providing a safe and welcoming environment for participants.

About the Role

The Hypothermia Coordinator will be responsible for setting up the Hypothermia program space, picking up and dropping off program participants using a large Shelter House-owned vehicle, conducting participant orientations, distributing meals, scheduling shower use, and ensuring participants' needs are met. Additionally, they will provide participants with information on resources such as the Drop-In Day Program and Emergency Shelter, and record and report information on participants utilizing the Hypothermia program.

Main Responsibilities:
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of participants by monitoring and maintaining participant safety and count throughout the shift.
  • Document the completion of regular walkthroughs to ensure the building and participants' safety.
  • Organize and distribute cots and bedding once the floors have been swept and mopped.
  • Clean and organize supply, cot, and bedding in the storage area.
  • Maintain the hypothermia area's cleanliness at all times.
  • Notify supervisors of any critical incidents and complete a Critical Incident Report before the end of the shift for review and submission.
  • Provide support, problem resolution, and emergency crisis intervention and stabilization services for shelter guests.
  • Perform frequent physical activities, including unloading and stocking donations, distributing supplies, laundry, organizing, and completing grounds checks and facility checks.
  • Prepare coffee and set out continental breakfast in the morning.
  • Maintain participants' dignity and confidentiality during service delivery and treat each participant with dignity and respect.
  • Complete intakes with new participants, explaining the program, schedule, expectations, community guidelines, completing paperwork, and ensuring participants understand safety expectations in the shelter.
  • Provide an orientation and tour to new participants and answer questions about the facility and available resources and services.
  • Ensure participants' basic needs are met by distributing toiletries, laundry supplies, and other items as needed and/or requested.
  • Remind participants respectfully and firmly of agreed-on safety guidelines as issues arise and deescalate crisis situations if necessary.
  • Encourage participants to engage with case management services through accessing the shelter and Drop-In Day Program.
  • Review and update the daily Hypothermia shelter log by documenting interactions with participants and significant events in the shelter; complete other required logs and review emails and incident reports.
  • Complete efficient and informative shift exchanges with incoming/outgoing staff and report on the day's activities to maintain consistency throughout the day.

Requirements and Qualifications

This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent and 1+ year of customer service experience. The ideal candidate will possess flexibility and a passion for serving neighbors experiencing homelessness. A valid driver's license and clean driving record are also essential. Ability to proficiently operate a personal computer, fax, printer, copier, and Microsoft Office products is required. Preference will be given to candidates with 1+ year of experience in a homeless shelter, psychiatric, or human services setting.

Physical Requirements

Annual TB tests are required. The ability to sit or stand for long periods and lift items weighing 10-20 pounds is necessary.
