Job Overview

Hillsborough County is seeking a skilled Field Data Technician to join our Public Works Geomatics Asset Inventory Team. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for performing asset inventory inspections on the County's stormwater, transportation, and/or traffic management infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform condition coding on Stormwater assets and report failed assets immediately.
  • Review As-Built plans of project area for Field Data Collection.
  • Investigate project area to digitize new or unreported features to ensure accurate representation of Stormwater, Telecommunications, and Transportation assets.
  • Perform Quality Control on field-collected GIS data.
  • Report differences in As-Built and As-Found information to management.
  • Perform advanced heads-up digitizing in an office environment, to include activities such as spatial overlays and quantifying work output.
  • Utilize work management software on an as-needed basis to plan work for asset collection teams.
  • Verify and update as-built Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data in the field to ensure geographically accurate representation of Stormwater systems.
  • Ensure tabular completeness of records in online GIS database.
  • Maintain equipment for field data collection and keep equipment clean, organized, and prepared to be used at any time.

Requirements

  • Extensive knowledge of GIS mapping.
  • Extensive knowledge of spatial data collection.
  • Knowledge of geodatabases.
  • Knowledge and understanding of complex Stormwater, Transportation, and Telecommunications infrastructure.
  • Ability to read and understand aerial photos, blueprints, field survey notes, deeds, plats, parcel data, engineering plans and sketches.
  • Skill in using technical devices such as tablets, cell phones, WIFI, desktop PC, laptop and the associated software for each as needed.

Work Environment

The successful candidate will work in a fast-paced environment with frequent exposure to the outdoors in various weather conditions and sometimes on rugged terrain. The position requires sitting, driving, walking, lifting, kneeling, bending, stooping, carrying tools, possible manual digging to investigate/verify infrastructure, and opening manhole lids.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate; AND
  • Two (2) years of experience in Field Data Collection; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education (not less than possession of a high school diploma/GED), training, and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies noted above.
