About the Role

As an experienced publishing professional, you will be responsible for acquiring and commissioning high-quality books in the Sciences. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of building book lists with national recognition and possess excellent editorial, business, and negotiation skills.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the acquisition and development of trade, professional, and scholarly books in the Sciences, ensuring they meet the highest intellectual quality and realistic profitability standards.
  • Represent the needs of readers and authors within the field, building a coherent list of titles that cater to various reader groups.
  • Perform periodic data-driven competitive analyses to stay up-to-date with industry trends.
  • Commission and develop works of significant interest to the Press, taking an proactive approach rather than just reacting to proposals.
  • Establish and maintain key series in the field, working closely with series editors to extend the Press's reach into new subfields.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree required; additional education may substitute for experience in accordance with the JHU equivalency formula.
  • Five (5) years of related publishing experience required.
  • Demonstrated experience acquiring trade, professional, and scholarly books for publication and building book lists of national reputation.
  • Excellent research, writing, speaking, and presentation skills.
  • Exceptional editorial, business, and negotiation skills, with knowledge of publishing arrangements, contracts, peer review, and copyright.
