About the Role

This position is responsible for the daily care and maintenance of assigned animal collections and associated facilities. The successful candidate will be involved in exhibit maintenance, diet preparation, conservation breeding programs, veterinary procedures, animal training and enrichment, guest interactions, and education programs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform daily cleaning of animal exhibits, service areas, and holding units using various tools and instruments while maintaining a safe environment.
  • Prepare and distribute diets, restock, inventory, and order feed supplies as needed.
  • Maintain exhibits and holding units to ensure animal, keeper, and visitor safety and appearance.
  • Design and construct exhibits/holding units by cutting and moving branches, securing them with dirt, cement, wire, and nails; install nest boxes and barrels and attach burlap to cage walls for privacy.
  • Capture and restrain animals for shipping/loading or routine/non-routine medical procedures under the direction of a supervisor.
  • Work with potentially dangerous animals (large ungulates, carnivores, venomous animals).
  • Assist the Animal Health Department with medical treatments, including prescribed medication/treatments, weighing/measuring, surgery, restraint/capture, and euthanasia of animals.
  • Observe animal collections daily for injury, illness, aggression, stress, breeding activity, diet intake, and fecal consistency.
  • Maintain accurate records of daily observations, including behavior, intake, fecal output, breeding behavior, aggression, behavioral enrichment, capture/restraint, prescribed medical treatments, in-house moves, and acquisitions/de-acquisitions.
  • Monitor life support systems, including water filtration, ozone generators, HVAC, and backup generators as needed.
  • Identify and communicate situations requiring repair and maintenance for animal, visitor, and staff safety, as well as overall facility upkeep.
  • Collaborate with the Curator of Behavioral Husbandry and Animal Care Supervisors/Managers/Curators/Veterinarians to work with animal collections on a one-to-one basis, such as crate training, practicing commands, clicker training, and orientating animals to new enclosures.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Zoology, Animal Science, Environmental Resources, Wildlife Management, or a related field from a college or university.
  • At least six months of exotic animal experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers, employees, and the general public.
Salary

The estimated salary for this role is $45,000 - $60,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications.
