Patient Transporter

The Patient Transport Tech role at VCU Health involves transporting patients with an automated external defibrillator (AED) to and from nursing units in support of direct patient care.
Responsibilities include responding and assisting with medical emergencies and Telemetry messages from cardiac monitoring devices to notify clinicians or technologists appropriately.
Transporting cardiac patients and reacting to radiology/non-radiology treatment/procedural areas, and cardiac units are also key aspects of this role.
Delivering specimens, medications, and medical equipment throughout the organization is another critical function.
Additionally, the Patient Transport Tech provides assistance by managing patient flow to the Emergency Department and Bed Management to prevent and relieve diversions and high census.
Ensuring patient safety utilizing Behavior Expectation for Error Prevention (BEEP) tools is a top priority.
Collaborating with fellow team members to provide a safe, caring, respectful, and comfortable experience for all patients is essential.
Assisting with emergency medical responses is also a critical aspect of this role.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements:
CPR certification is preferred, and National Association of Healthcare Transport Management (NAHTM) Certified Healthcare Transporter (CHT) certification is also preferred.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment:
CPR certification is required within 30 days of hire date, and National Association of Healthcare Transport Management (NAHTM) Certified Healthcare Transporter (CHT) certification is preferred.
Experience:
Previous experience using a personal computer and various software applications, including Microsoft, e-mail, etc., is required.
Strong communication, interpersonal, and critical-thinking skills are essential.
Experience in a healthcare setting and/or in customer service is preferred.
Previous experience in intense and high-stress clinical environments and/or situations is also preferred.
Education/training:
A high school graduate or equivalent is required.
Education/training preferred:
Post High School courses from an accredited program, in an allied health or healthcare-related field, are preferred.
Independent action(s) required:
Using critical-thinking skills to recognize changes in a patient's baseline status before and during transport, which may include medical emergencies, is essential.
Recognizing changes in a patient's baseline status before transporting is also critical.
Interacting effectively with nursing units, physicians, technologists, and patients is required.
Documenting specimen and medical equipment inventories is another key responsibility.
Efficiently utilizing Tele Tracking XT, Cerner, Epic, MX-40, bed exit alarm, Power chart, Orchestrate, Vocera, and iPhone for direct patient care is essential.
Following hospital and departmental policies is also required.
Job duties may include handling, transporting, accessing, and/or contacting medications and related supplies.

Additional position requirements:
Must be prepared to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, extended hours, and during inclement weather to ensure patient flow and throughput.
Employee is subject to outside environment conditions when providing requested services.
