Position Summary

This role operates under the direct supervision of a licensed Funeral Director and/or licensed Embalmer, performing various tasks during the preparation, planning, and execution of funeral and memorial services. The apprentice will gain hands-on experience while ensuring that the expectations of client families and their guests are met with excellence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the Funeral Director/Embalmer in consulting with client families or legal representatives to design services that meet their memorialization needs.
  • Present client families with all available merchandising and service options.
  • Gather necessary information to complete required documentation such as obituaries, death certificates, burial permits, and insurance forms.
  • Participate in all service arrangements and details with clergy, presiding persons, fraternal or military organizations, and others involved in the funeral service.
  • Utilize systems to record merchandise selections, enter contracts, and complete necessary forms.
  • Assist with the preparation and embalming of the deceased for interment, cremation, or other dispositions, adhering to legal requirements with utmost respect and dignity.
  • Ensure accurate and timely completion of paperwork, including permits, logs, identification tags, and certificates, in compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
  • Safely utilize embalming instruments and machinery following company guidelines.
  • Under the direction of a licensed Funeral Director/Embalmer, assist in preparing the deceased (dressing, applying makeup, and casketing).
  • Help plan and schedule visitations and services.
  • Assist in setting up visitation areas according to family wishes, including adjusting lighting and arranging flowers or plants.
  • Guide families and service attendees to and from the funeral service location.
  • Support the transportation of client families to ensure timely departures and arrivals.
  • Assist in preparing the deceased for transportation as needed.
  • Help arrange and coordinate the shipment of remains to and from various locations.
  • Adhere to operational and safety procedures, utilizing personal protective equipment as required.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization in the preparation room, refrigeration unit, and other facilities.
  • Participate in removals/first-call as needed.
  • Identify and address any hazards on the grounds.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Four-year degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience preferred.
  • Active enrollment in a Mortuary School/Program is required.
  • Ability to pass applicable Board exams (National/State).
  • Valid state-issued driver's license in good standing with an acceptable driving record.

Additional Qualifications

  • Fluency in reading, writing, and speaking English; bilingual skills are a plus.
  • High degree of overall computer proficiency.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to effectively present information to client families, co-workers, and leadership.
  • Willingness to engage in community-based organizations to grow market share.
  • Strong communication skills with internal and external customers, community leaders, and grieving families.
  • Empathy towards client families and their guests, demonstrating tact and patience in emotionally charged situations.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Most duties are performed in an indoor office setting, though some tasks may occur outdoors.
  • Outdoor duties may involve exposure to natural elements such as inclement weather, extreme temperatures, uneven ground, dust, gas, and/or fumes.
  • Equipment used includes, but is not limited to, computers, fax machines, copiers, multi-line phone systems, AV systems, body lifts, and casket handling/transport devices.
  • Employees must possess sufficient strength and manual dexterity and must comply with safety procedures, including wearing any required personal protective equipment.
  • Regularly required to climb, sit, stand, bend, kneel, and frequently lift up to 75 pounds, with occasional lifting of up to 100 pounds.
  • Job duties may require power reaching, pushing, and pulling.
  • Employees must be able to perform duties when awakened from sleep.
  • This position may involve routine exposure to chemicals and/or bloodborne pathogens.
  • Employees must be able to drive a company vehicle and maintain a good driving record, qualifying for company vehicle insurance.
  • Overtime may be necessary or required.

Travel Requirements

  • This position may require up to 10 percent out-of-area or overnight travel, primarily local during business hours.
