Join the Bainbridge Island Metro Park and Recreation District team as a Lifeguard, responsible for maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas.
Job Summary:The Lifeguard will create a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes safety and recreation in accordance with all District policies, procedures, guidelines, and best practices.
Key Responsibilities:- Represent the Bainbridge Island Metro Park and Recreation District wearing appropriate uniform on shift and act in a professional manner at all times.
- Maintain constant and effective surveillance of the aquatics facility and patrons and enforce facility rules.
- Provide first aid and CPR as required.
- Respond quickly and decisively to any and all emergencies and take care to spot hazards as well as potential hazards and proactively take measures to avoid accidents.
- Perform and document pool chemistry checks and report imbalances to management in a timely manner.
- Report maintenance issues to management in a timely manner.
- Perform basic computer tasks, including data entry, updating spreadsheets, and logging in and out of the computerized timesheet system.
- Maintain work schedule and vacation request electronically.
- Maintain regular and timely attendance and be ready to start work when shift begins.
- Know, understand, and implement various safety rules and guidelines and ensure all activities are executed appropriately.
- Know and follow all District policies and procedures.
- Work effectively and communicate with the public and co-workers in both written and oral forms.
- Attend and complete all trainings and certification courses as required.
- Provide exceptional customer service to patrons and staff, maintaining appropriate signage regarding schedules and information at the facility.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification required.
- At least 15 years of age.
- Possess strong swimming skills.
- American Red Cross Water Park Guard Certification preferred.
This is a non-smoking workplace. The work environment is mainly indoors. Work is performed in an aquatics center. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. - Must be able to hear distress noises and hear and see distress signals in a noisy aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere in the zone of responsibility.
- Will require long periods of sitting or standing in a hot, humid, and noisy environment.
- Must be able to sit, stand, walk, grab, pull, and push objects in or out of water, squat down, stoop, kneel, crouch, and jump.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Hours will vary depending on the pool schedule and may include early morning, weekend, holiday, and evening shifts.

Bainbridge Island Metro Park and Recreation District offers sick leave to part-time employees. Sick leave is accrued at one hour of paid sick leave for every 40 hours worked. Employees receive a discount on most Park District classes, free pool pass at the Aquatic Center, and basic fitness membership at the Bainbridge Island Recreation Center (BIRC) while employed for employees and dependents.
