Job Description

The State of Delaware is seeking a highly skilled Forensic Pathologist to join our team in the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. As an Assistant Medical Examiner, you will play a critical role in determining the cause and manner of death statewide.

About the Role

This position requires strong analytical and communication skills, as well as the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. You will be responsible for performing forensic autopsies and external body examinations, reviewing reports of death, communicating with family members and law enforcement officials, and preparing detailed reports and findings.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct thorough and accurate forensic autopsies and external body examinations to determine the cause and manner of death.
  • Review reports of death received from hospitals, police agencies, and private physicians to determine jurisdiction and coordinate investigations.
  • Communicate effectively with family members, friends, and associates of decedents to clarify unclear points and gather background information.
  • Conduct on-site investigations at death scenes to gather data and information.
  • Preliminary examine bodies to determine if a complete autopsy is required.
  • Direct the activities of forensic investigators and autopsy room support personnel during examinations.
  • Conduct microscopic examinations of specimens, tissues, organs, fluids, and blood to determine irregular conditions contributing to death.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports and findings through dictation and furnishing evidence to law enforcement officials.
  • Collaborate with hospitals, healthcare agencies, law enforcement, and criminal justice agencies.
Requirements
  1. Possession of an Anatomic Pathology Certification or eligibility for certification.
  2. Possession of a Delaware Physician M.D. or D.O. license or eligibility for a Delaware license.
  3. Three years of experience in forensic pathology.
Estimated Salary

$124,500 - $175,400 per year, depending on experience and qualifications.
