The Institute for Human Services, Inc. is a leading human services agency dedicated to ending and preventing homelessness in Hawaii.

We are seeking an experienced Registered Nurse to join our team as a Homeless Services Nursing Specialist.

Job Summary:

The Registered Nurse will work in partnership with various IHS programs and community health providers to provide triage, nursing, and urgent medical care to homeless individuals who may be in crisis or needing medical, detox, psychiatric, and social services.

Responsibilities:

  1. Provide direct care, initial first aid, and nursing services to unsheltered/sheltered homeless individuals.
  2. Referrals and collaboration with operations staff to ensure successful placement, service, linkage, and supports for homeless individuals entering IHS shelters.
  3. Collaboration with physicians, psychiatrists, and other IHS staff to identify mental health, medical needs, diagnoses, and linkages to access medications and medication appointments.
  4. Communication with case managers regarding healthcare issues, including chronic illness management, medication management, diagnostic procedures, and health education.
  5. Providing guest health education on medical and mental health concerns frequently encountered with persons served.
  6. Maintaining accurate documentation related to the provision of services according to program requirements.

Requirements:

  • A working knowledge of healthcare and medical needs of homeless and/or disenfranchised populations.
  • Excellent interpersonal, problem-solving, and multi-tasking skills.
  • Able to perform nursing assessments, develop appropriate formulations, interventions, and service plans that assist individuals with complex problems.
  • Current BLS or CPR certification.
  • Possess personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and commitment to the mission.
  • Flexible and able to multitask; can work within an ambiguous, fast-moving environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associates Degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university.
  • Licensed as a registered nurse in the state of Hawaii.
  • At least 1-2 years of work experience in nursing or community health.
