We are looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our team in San Francisco. This role will involve leading engineering teams through all stages of projects, playing a key role in marketing the studio, and managing the mechanical discipline.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Serve as the engineering leader on projects of any size and play a larger role in the marketing of the studio and management of the discipline.
  2. Lead a team performing analysis, design, and documentation of heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and controls.
  3. Assist in establishing project goals, budgets, and schedules, track project performance, and follow/enforce quality control procedures.
  4. Meet with clients, project teams, code officials, contractors, and others to address mechanical discipline issues and develop effective working relationships.
  5. Present engineering design solutions to client representatives and/or design review committees.
  6. Serve as a mechanical systems specialist, conduct research in problem areas of considerable scope/complexity, and devise solutions.
  7. Contribute to and advocate for SmithGroup's sustainable design initiatives.
  8. Ensure document and project quality through SmithGroup's QA/QC standards.
  9. Mentor junior and intermediate-level staff and participate in performance coaching.
  10. Participate in the recruitment and interviewing process as requested.

Requirements:

  1. A bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or equivalent.
  2. Minimum 10 years of experience working as a mechanical engineer designing HVAC, plumbing, fire suppression, sustainable design, and automatic control systems, including experience performing energy modeling.
  3. Experience leading in sectors for Science and Technology, Higher Education, or Healthcare.
  4. LEED AP preferred. Professional Engineer (PE) registration required.
  5. The ability to lead and mentor others in the area of expertise.
  6. Working knowledge of the design and construction process and the ability to understand and communicate with professionals of other disciplines.
  7. Working knowledge of Autodesk Revit and Microsoft Office Suite software.
  8. Excellent verbal and written communication skills in dealing with internal and external clients.
