Job Summary

The Burnsed Lab in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Virginia School of Medicine seeks a highly skilled and motivated Lab Technician to assist in managing the day-to-day operations of the lab under Dr. Burnsed's supervision. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in laboratory techniques and procedures, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the management of the lab, including ordering supplies, maintaining equipment, and ensuring compliance with safety protocols.
  • Perform a variety of laboratory tasks, including collecting and processing specimens, preparing culture media, and conducting experiments.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of research projects, including designing experiments, collecting and analyzing data, and preparing reports.
  • Provide technical support to research staff, including training and mentoring junior staff members.
  • Contribute to the maintenance of accurate and detailed records of laboratory activities, including laboratory notebooks, inventory records, and safety logs.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's or bachelor's degree in a related field preferred.
  • At least 1 year of laboratory experience, including student experience; 2 years of experience preferred.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, with a strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Physical stamina to perform tasks that require standing, squatting, and lifting, with the ability to work in a fast-paced laboratory environment.
Working Conditions

This position is located in Charlottesville, VA, and requires the ability to work in a laboratory setting with exposure to chemicals, biological agents, and other hazardous materials. The successful candidate will be required to undergo a background check and complete a pre-employment health screen prior to starting work.
