The Department of Perioperative Services at The University of Iowa is seeking a skilled Surgical Technologist II to join our team.

This role is responsible for assisting with surgical procedures, providing therapeutic, preventive, and emergency patient care duties, and preparing, operating, and maintaining routine and complex equipment, instruments, supplies, and implants.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in surgical technology, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities include:

  • Preparing surgical areas for patient care and anticipating the needs of the surgical team
  • Serving as a primary preceptor for Surgical Technology students, Summer 10 Nursing Interns, or new staff
  • Serving on shared governance committees, POD committees, or EBP workgroups
  • Applying knowledge related to emergency situations and surgical procedures in the operating room
  • Understanding the principles of medical and surgical asepsis and recognizing and communicating breaks in aseptic technique
  • Providing proper care and handling of equipment, instruments, supplies, and implants
  • Understanding various surgical equipment and advanced surgical instrumentation to anticipate needs during surgery
  • Performing delegated technical functions and clinical activities in accordance with institutional policies
  • Facilitating patient care with regard to the patient's condition and age
  • Collaborating with peers to make decisions related to surgical patient care and maintaining the sterile field
  • Participating in collaborative review of pertinent patient information for accuracy of procedure and associated factors influencing preparedness for procedure
  • Assisting in revising or updating care plans and developing new care plans for new procedures or surgeons
  • Organizing and reviewing instrument trays and supply shelves
  • Organizing and maintaining trial or specialty equipment, supplies, or instrument items
  • Displaying critical thinking skills and anticipating the needs of the patient and surgeon
  • Taking preventative action on potential patient problems/complications and reporting unusual incidents
  • Providing documentation according to department/division standards in conjunction with the Registered Nurse
  • Performing computer functions within the scope of role as defined by the individual unit or units supported
  • Precepting new staff and/or student technologists to scrubbing duties
  • Mentoring new employees and other surgical team members
  • Practicing standard precautions in infection control in accordance with institutional policy
  • Following changes in patient care protocol based on research findings
  • Participating in and contributing to unit staff meetings and in-service programs
  • Participating in perioperative initiatives or shared governance committees
  • Performing other special projects and tasks as assigned
  • Ensuring daily unit documentation/tasks are completed, such as case reviews for procedure, implants, and supplies
  • Communicating with surgeons regarding implants, instruments, or supplies for future cases
  • Organizing/revise specialty carts, care plans, or service line information
  • Organizing and providing specialty in-services

This is a 90% position with a schedule of three 12-hour shifts, stacked, with call, weekend call, and holiday coverage, or three 12-hour shifts starting at 0900, with weekend call and holiday coverage required.

The minimum eligibility requirements include satisfactory completion of a vocational or military course in surgical technology, or certification as a Surgical Technologist (NBSTSA and NCCT), and two years' experience as a Surgical Technologist.

Desirable qualifications include experience in scrubbing pediatric emergency cases, including craniotomy, ortho trauma, and general surgery.
