Job Title: Dentist

We are seeking a highly skilled Dentist to join our team at Community of Hope, a mission-driven nonprofit organization dedicated to improving health and ending family homelessness in Washington, DC.

About the Role:

The Dentist will provide direct, team-based dental care to patients, meeting clinical standards, within the appropriate scope of practice. This position reports directly to the Associate Dental Director.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provides direct dental care to patients on a daily basis, following approved protocols, including examining teeth and gums for all infections and diseases, preparing charts of mouths and teeth, X-rays and diagnosing diseases and lesions, preparing cavities and fills them with appropriate materials, extracting teeth and roots, treating infections and diseases of the mouth and teeth, administering local and general anesthesia, and preparing fits, adjusting and finishing dentures, crowns, and bridgework.
  • Renders corrective and preventive dental treatment to children and conducts dental health education and screening programs in Marie Reed as time allows.
  • Gives instruction in oral hygiene and prophylaxis and records information in the chart.
  • Maintains the required productivity numbers expected by Community of Hope, as set by the board.
  • Uses language translation services per policy to ensure effective and respectful patient communication.
  • Precepts dental students and dental externs during their community medicine rotations or externship, as needed.
  • Communicates with other providers at COH on issues of patient care, particularly indications of chronic disease discovered during patient interactions.
  • Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards, procedures, and legal guidelines.
  • Serves as a flexible, team player, and assists other staff and patients as needed.
  • Participates in quality management activities, including peer review which occurs every other month.
  • Completes and locks all progress notes within 3 business days after patient visit.
  • Documents all patient encounters, including face-to-face, telephone, and electronic communications, in the electronic health record in a timely fashion.
  • Uses all mandatory, structured fields as required in the electronic health record.
  • Documents all materials given to the patient in the electronic record.
  • Signed off on all laboratory results, diagnostic imaging results, and referral reports in a timely fashion; sharing this information with patients as needed.
  • Responds to all telephone encounters with a sense of urgency and in a timely fashion.
  • Completes all billing corrections within 5 business days of the reported correction.
  • Secures patient information and maintains patient confidence by completing and safeguarding medical records and keeping patient information confidential.
  • Provides updates on client successes or program outcomes for fundraising and communications purposes as needed.
  • Represents Community of Hope at health-related community functions as requested.
Requirements:
  • Dental Degree (DDS, Board Certified preferred) required.
  • Current license or ability to acquire a DC license in a timely manner required.
  • Any providers who are licensed in Maryland who provide a copy of their license and MD CDS to Talent Management are also eligible for MD licensure reimbursement.
  • Current CDS and DEA required.
  • Continuous dental education to maintain license required.
  • Current BLS certification (ACLS or BLS for the Healthcare Provider or equivalent) required.
  • Commitment to work with underserved populations in an urban setting.
  • Ability to work in non-profit environment.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and/or Amharic a plus.
  • Able to work across sites if requested.
  • Shares Saturday clinic coverage with other providers by completing at least one Saturday shift per month.
  • Able to work evening hours as needed.
  • Proof of required vaccinations is required. This includes, but may not be limited to, Flu and Covid. COH will consider requests for reasonable accommodations for anyone who cannot be vaccinated for a religious or medical reason, subject to applicable law.

For over 40 years, we have provided healthcare, housing, and supportive services for under-resourced, underserved, and people experiencing homelessness in Washington, DC. As a Federally Qualified Health Center, we provide medical, dental, emotional wellness, and care coordination services for the whole family at three locations in DC. Community of Hope also strongly emphasizes maternal and child health, with midwifery practice and the only free-standing birth center in DC.

In 2020, Community of Hope provided about 28,400 medical visits, 7,000 dental visits, and 10,000 behavioral health visits for about 11,000 patients. Community of Hope provides community walk-in COVID testing and COVID vaccines. Community of Hope is also one of the largest providers in DC of housing and support services for families and individuals experiencing homelessness. Through providing these programs, we live out our mission to improve health and end family and individual homelessness to make Washington, DC, more equitable.
