Job Title: Public Health Nurse II

This position provides direct service/preventive care to individuals and families in the clinic, home, and community setting. The successful candidate will serve as a back-up Communicable Disease Nurse, Lead TB Control Nurse, Adult Day Health Specialist, and Enhanced Role STD/HIV Nurse.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Receives positive lab reports from various sources, investigates authenticity, and determines if appropriate testing was done.
  • Performs investigation by interviewing cases, contacts, and medical providers, and counsels clients about diseases and control measures.
  • Provides treatment to cases and contacts as needed, completes Confidential Communicable Disease Reports, and submits reports to the NC Communicable Disease Control Branch.
  • Coordinates care of active TB clients with private providers and/or Medical Director, provides and/or oversees the administration of medications, provision of x-rays, and assessment of clients with active and latent TB.
  • Serves as a primary resource person for community medical providers, participates in quarterly Epi Team meetings, and functions as a primary service provider for STD clients.
  • Obtains health history, performs comprehensive exams, counsels clients for risk reduction, control measures, and contact identification, administers treatment under standing orders, and refers clients for MD evaluation as needed.
  • Completes CD reports and Surveillance Forms as required, provides and oversees HIV counseling and testing, serves as a primary contact person for Regional DIS, reviews reports from State Lab, and coordinates appropriate follow-up.
  • Is responsible for ordering and maintaining medication supply, assists in writing Standing Orders, interviews and provides counseling/referrals in various clinical or community settings, and participates in Flu Administration programs.
  • Conducts monitoring visits to Adult Day Health Center to assure compliance with operation standards, acts as a consultant to improve delivery of health-related services, and must be able to understand program requirements and applicable laws to provide direct care and education.
Requirements:
  • Graduation from a four-year university or college with a B.S. Degree in Nursing that includes a Public Health rotation and one year of Public Health Nursing experience.
  • Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the North Carolina Board of Nursing and a valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina.
  • Ability to communicate program guidelines to other agencies and the community, provide instructions to clients orally and in writing, and perform assessments and record observations and care rendered in the medical record.

Work Environment:

This position requires more mental than physical effort, with extended periods of sitting, walking, or standing, and may be exposed to poor home environments, over-crowded noisy clinic settings, infectious diseases, bloodborne pathogens, and angry/disruptive clients.

Work Schedule:

8:30am to 5:00pm Monday through Friday, with evening and weekend hours possible for service provision, meetings, and educational classes.
