Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Patient Service Coordinator/Medical Assistant to join our team at Johns Hopkins University. As a key member of our healthcare team, you will be responsible for providing exceptional patient care and support services to ensure a positive experience for our patients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Schedule patients for laboratory tests, medical examinations, and consultations.
  • Coordinate visits within the department or between multiple departments.
  • Telephone and interview patients to obtain accurate pre-registration information and confirm appointments.
  • Verify and enter pre-registration and insurance information into the computer system.
  • Obtain or verify patients' demographic data by phone or in person.
  • Fill vacancies due to cancellations.
  • Obtain pre-certifications as required by patients' health care insurers or managed care providers.
  • Register patients for clinical appointments using computerized database.
  • Inform patients of costs of care being provided and guide them to appropriate resources for further information, guidance, or assistance.
  • Assist in arranging patient transportation.
  • Answer phones and provide routine information to callers.
  • Perform administrative tasks related to patient admission.
  • Review patient charges and extract chargeable items.
  • Collect time of service payments, issue receipts, and prepare cash settlement records.
  • Input diagnostic and procedure codes to TAP system for computer billing.
  • Discuss patient charges with patients and/or patients' families.
  • Work with available downtown and local support to evaluate eligibility for alternative sources of financing.
  • Refer patients to appropriate office and ensure application for funds has been made.
  • Prepare patients' statement of charges and review with patient.
  • Assist with basic insurance and third-party queries and explain payment policies.
  • Mail lab and patient result letters, create, and maintain electronic patient charts.
  • Provide accurate and timely messages to providers.
  • Fulfill HIPAA compliant ingoing and outgoing medical records requests.
  • Manage incoming and outgoing faxes.
  • Provide accurate appointment check-in and check-out.
  • Display responsible behaviors, communicate effectively to others, and function as a member of the healthcare team.
  • Function under the direct supervision and authority of the physician when performing clinical tasks during patient care.
  • Report to the clinic manager, who is responsible for administrative supervision, staff development, and orientation of the PSC/MA to the area's policies and procedures.
  • Maintain an inventory of examination/procedure room supplies.
  • Assist in the organization of efficient patient flow.
  • Organize the clinic environment to assure patient safety.
  • Provide guidance for and act as a role model for other PSC/MAs in the clinical area.
Requirements
  • Certification/Registration as a Medical Assistant (e.g. CMA, AAMA, RMA, AMT, and NAHP) required.
  • Current CPR certification required.
  • Must maintain MA and CPR certification/registration during duration of employment in this position.
