Position Overview:
The City of Norfolk's Vector Control Department is dedicated to safeguarding the community from various disease-carrying vectors.

Our Vector Control team is responsible for the prevention and management of rodent and mosquito populations on municipal properties, which includes buildings, tidal ditches, larviciding, and species identification.

The department collaborates with residents to conduct inspections, address concerns, and educate the public.


Role Summary:
The Mosquito Control Operations Supervisor plays a crucial role in overseeing vector control initiatives, ensuring that mosquito management efforts are executed thoroughly and effectively to protect the community from mosquito-borne illnesses.


Key Responsibilities:
1. Supervise vector control operations by planning, delegating, and assessing work performance.
2. Conduct training sessions and provide constructive feedback to team members.
3. Oversee the maintenance of equipment and keep accurate logs, records, and inventories.
4. Lead mosquito and rodent surveillance and control efforts in both field and laboratory environments.
5. Conduct environmental health inspections by examining properties for signs of rodent activity or mosquito breeding, advising or referring as necessary, and implementing treatments on municipal land.

6. Analyze data by inputting information into databases, performing computer analyses, and mapping surveillance sites and breeding sources using GPS technology.

7. Manage pest extermination by preparing and applying rodent and mosquito control chemicals.
8. Perform additional duties as required.


Qualifications:
1. Minimum of one year of supervisory or team leadership experience, or two years of experience in vector and mosquito control.
2. Preferred experience in mosquito laboratory work, including trap setting, specimen identification, and testing.
3. Category 8 Pesticide Applicator's License must be obtained within fourteen months of appointment.
4. A valid Driver's License is required.

This position demands the ability to work independently during backyard inspections and collaboratively as part of a team during tidal ditching operations. Candidates should be prepared to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including mosquito control activities during hot summer months and navigating marshy terrains while equipped with appropriate gear.


Work Schedule:
Flexible hours are available. Typically, the schedule is Monday to Friday, with some early morning or evening work required based on operational needs.
